About this listen
A propulsive novel of World War II espionage by the author of The Glass Room
Barely out of school and doing her bit for the British war effort, Marian Sutro has one quality that makes her stand out—she is a native French speaker. It is this that attracts the attention of the SOE, the Special Operations Executive, which trains agents to operate in occupied Europe. Drawn into this strange, secret world at the age of nineteen, she finds herself undergoing commando training, attending a “school for spies,” and ultimately, one autumn night, parachuting into France from an Royal Air Force bomber to join the Wordsmith resistance network.
But there’s more to Marian’s mission than meets the eye of her SOE controllers; her mission has been hijacked by another secret organization that wants her to go to Paris and persuade a friend—a research physicist—to join the Allied war effort. The outcome could affect the whole course of the war.
A fascinating blend of fact and fiction, Trapeze is both an old-fashioned adventure story and a modern exploration of a young woman’s growth into adulthood. There is violence, and there is love. There is death and betrayal, deception and revelation. But above all there is Marian Sutro, an ordinary young woman who, like her real-life counterparts in the SOE, did the most extraordinary things at a time when the ordinary was not enough.

Austen wrote, 'I am going to take a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like' and thus introduces the handsome, clever, rich - and flawed, Emma Woodhouse. Emma is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage; nothing however delights her more than matchmaking her fellow residents of Highbury. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected.

There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there's Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. There's White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. And once upon a time, there was Black London...but no one speaks of that now.

Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

John Fowles’s The Magus was a literary landmark of the 1960s. Nicholas Urfe goes to a Greek island to teach at a private school and becomes enmeshed in curious happenings at the home of a mysterious Greek recluse, Maurice Conchis. Are these events, involving attractive young English sisters, just psychological games, or an elaborate joke, or more? Reality shifts as the story unfolds. The Magus reflected the issues of the 1960s perfectly, and it continues to create tension and concern today.

“In wartime,” Winston Churchill wrote, “truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies.” For Britain’s counterintelligence operations, this meant finding the unlikeliest agent imaginable - a history professor named Alfred Vicary, handpicked by Churchill himself to expose a highly dangerous, but unknown, traitor. The Nazis, however, have also chosen an unlikely agent.

Story
Daughters of Eden focuses on the lives and fortunes of four very different young women at the outbreak of the Second World War. Marjorie, left at a boarding school by her emigrating mother; plain Poppy, pushed into marriage with a mean-spirited aristocrat; Kate, despised by her father, but determined to prove herself; and man-mad Lily, who turns out to be the bravest of them all. That all of them are chosen to work undercover for the espionage unit at Eden Park is a surprise, not least to them.

Story
From the London pop scene, to the opera stages of Europe; from a tiny Greek island, to a stifling manor house full of secrets and deceptions; from the sun-drenched Queensland coast, to the silent outback; Angela and Ellie are two women both looking for something. One in search of her identity and her memory; the other in search of the love that she had and lost; theirs is a duet whose last note will not be sung until the heart-stopping climax, when a shadow from the past returns to claim them both.

Fantastical Fictional History
Where does Trapeze rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This was a fantastic book, probably in my top 20.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The main character was amazing. Such a heroine, complex and yet simple.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Anne Hataway would make this story into a fantastic movie as the lead. Is it the Catholic or Protestant spy?

Great narration
This was a really enjoyable listen. The story is a very good, straightforward one and a nice example of the genre, but I really adored the narration. The French words are pronounced well and the narrator handles her characters beautifully. I will seek out more books read by Kate Reading.

Story line is good
This book could have been great. The female character in this book was completely unbelievable. Why is she did things her thoughts were shallow. She was totally unbelievable and the ending was abruptly ended. Glad it was free or I would never have finished it!

Good story...distracting narration
Any additional comments?
The story was interesting, but the over-the-top accents made me not want to listen. I might try to read it in print instead because my friends love this book, and I feel like I am missing out.

Good book bad ending
I understand that books have to end even if I am attached to characters. This one ends so abruptly it is jarring. So much detail then it ends mid scene. Otherwise I really liked the book. The tension was palpable.

Wow, An ending that will surprise
Good reading, good performance. A marvelous narrative with attention to details. The story seduces you by its numerous twists and descriptive prose. The finale was unexpected for me, and I want more. Journey into the past, and get lost in this thrilling adventure.

Great personal look at history
Any additional comments?
I enjoyed getting a glimpse into the secret lives of women undercover in France, and especially enjoyed the moral questions faced by these very young women who didn't have much life experience upon which to base their choices.
Well written and excellently read.

A good story despite anachronisms
Good WWII spy novel with good narration. Several anachronisms, especially those re development of atomic bomb, are irritating because they are gratuitous and seem unnecessary to plot development.

It kept me on pins and needles. It’s hard to imagine how men and women could be so brave fighting in the resistance.
