About this listen
Toxic Algae is an epidemic threatening natural waterways locally, and globally. Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) are an explosive growth of photosynthetic organisms in a body of water which can harm amphibians, fish, wildlife, pets, and human health by producing dangerous toxins.
Fresh water systems such as ponds, lakes, rivers, and reservoirs are under assault from many directions increasing chemical imbalance stressing the aquatic water systems ability to stay in healthy balance.
Toxic Algae in Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) are an increasing threat to waterways throughout the country, and are reported with greater frequency in all 50 states. The water quality of our Ponds, Lakes, Rivers, and Reservoirs are of prime importance to local communities, and the general health of local environments and ecosystems globally. Used for recreation, and as a food source for millions of people worldwide, healthy waterways are vital for ecosystems and people everywhere.
Cyanobacteria are a photosynthetic bacteria which is normally a very productive part of the aquatic ecosystem. However, when Cyanobacteria and Algae "Break bad" then very harmful toxins can be produced by some species which can be highly dangerous.
Stressed from nutrient loading events such as a storm run-off, natural water bodies are being stressed to the point of imbalance introducing invasive species - including Toxic Algae.
Cyanobacteria (called a Blue-Green Algae) are a type of photosynthetic bacteria. When a pond, lake, stream, river, or other water body experiences a nutrient loading event conditions can trigger an algal bloom which may result in a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB).
This Audiobook describes the conditions which trigger Harmful Algal Blooms, and how they can be treated, and prevented, in Ponds, Lakes, Rivers, and Reservoirs.

Story
Are you looking for a gardening challenge like no other? Would you like to grow organic plants and vegetables in a hydroponic garden that is sustainable? Hydroponic gardening has been around for centuries and has been used by different cultures from around the world. Its simple concept is that plants grow in water, fertilized in a symbiotic relationship with aquatic creatures like fish, snails, and others. The result is a complete eco-system that benefits all; the plants, the marine creatures, and you.

Story
Gone are the days when farming had to be an elaborate, space-occupying and labor- or machine-intensive activity. These days, you can set up a fully self-sustaining garden or farm that has both animals and plants in one place, with all the components relying on each other in some way. If you are wondering how that is even possible, welcome to aquaponics - a form of farming which combines aquaculture (the raising of fish and other aquatic animals) with hydroponics (the growing of plants without soil) in one system that has unparalleled levels of efficiency.

Hydroponics gardening is an ancient practice that has been around for thousands of years and is a great way to grow plants without the soil. It is becoming more prevalent in the modern day, thanks to the desire for many people to grow their own food in an organic system that is entirely natural. With practical information aimed at home DIYers, this book shows just how to build, plant, and maintain a lot of hydroponic systems, some of which cost just a few dollars to make.

Story
"Reduce, reuse, recycle," urge environmentalists. In other words, do more with less in order to minimize damage. William McDonough and Michael Braungart argue in this provocative book that this approach perpetuates a one-way, "cradle to grave" manufacturing model that dates back to the Industrial Revolution, a model that casts off as much as 90 percent of the materials it uses as waste, much of it toxic. They challenge the notion that human industry must inevitably damage the natural world.

Our inheritance also includes our living metabolic network, a flame passed from generation to generation, right back to the origin of life. In Transformer, biochemist Nick Lane reveals a scientific renaissance that is hiding in plain sight-how the same simple chemistry gives rise to life and causes our demise.

Story
Tim Flannery’s first major book since The Weather Makers charts the history of life on our planet. Here on Earth, which draws its points of departure from Darwin and Wallace, Lovelock and Dawkins, is an extraordinary exploration of evolution and sustainability. Our success as a species has had disastrous effects on many of the Earth’s ecosystems and could lead to our downfall. But equally, Flannery argues, we are now equipped as never before to explore our true relationship with the planet on which our biological, economic and cultural futures depend.

When we use chemical fertilizers, we injure the microbial life that sustains plants and then become increasingly dependent on an arsenal of toxic substances. Teaming with Microbes offers an alternative to this vicious circle and details how to garden in a way that strengthens, rather than destroys, the soil food web. You’ll discover that healthy soil is teeming with life - not just earthworms and insects, but a staggering multitude of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms.

An excellent bottle of wine can be the spark that inspires a brainstorming session. Such was the case for Ian Tattersall and Rob DeSalle, scientists who frequently collaborate on book and museum exhibition projects. When the conversation turned to wine one evening, it almost inevitably led the two - one a palaeoanthropologist, the other a molecular biologist - to begin exploring the many intersections between science and wine. This audiobook presents their fascinating, freewheeling answers to the question.

Story
When we use chemical fertilizers, we injure the microbial life that sustains plants and then become increasingly dependent on an arsenal of toxic substances. Teaming with Microbes offers an alternative to this vicious circle and details how to garden in a way that strengthens, rather than destroys, the soil food web. You’ll discover that healthy soil is teeming with life - not just earthworms and insects, but a staggering multitude of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms.

In The Secret Language of Cells, doctor and neuroscientist Jon Lieff lets us listen in on these conversations, and reveals their significance for everything from mental health to cancer.

Story
Regarded as one of the brightest young scientists of his generation, Lewis Dartnell proposes that the key to preserving civilization in an apocalyptic scenario is to provide a quickstart guide, adapted to cataclysmic circumstances. The Knowledge describes many of the modern technologies we employ, but first it explains the fundamentals upon which they are built. The Knowledge is a brilliantly original guide to the fundamentals of science and how it built our modern world as well as a thought experiment about the very idea of scientific knowledge itself.

Story
From the very beginning, life on Earth has been defined by war. Today, those first wars continue to be fought around and literally inside us, influencing our individual behavior and that of civilization as a whole. War between populations - whether between different species or between rival groups of humans - is seen as an inevitable part of the evolutionary process. The popular concept of "the survival of the fittest" explains and often excuses these actions.

Story
Most historians study the smallest slivers of time, emphasizing specific dates, individuals, and documents. But what would it look like to study the whole of history, from the big bang through the present day - and even into the remote future? How would looking at the full span of time change the way we perceive the universe, the earth, and our very existence? These were the questions David Christian set out to answer when he created the field of "Big History", the most exciting new approach to understanding where we have been, where we are, and where we are going.

And contrary to what we hear from media “experts” about today’s “renewable revolution” and “climate emergency,” reality has proven Epstein right.
