Acerca de esta escucha

Once he was a hero of the Great War, and then a member of the dreaded Black House. Now he is the criminal linchpin of Low Town. His name is Warden. He thought he had left the war behind him, but a summons from up above brings the past sharply, uncomfortably, back into focus.

General Montgomery's daughter is missing somewhere in Low Town, searching for clues about her brother's murder. The General wants her found, before the stinking streets can lay claim to her, too.

Dark, violent, and shot through with corruption, this book is a fantastic successor to a much-heralded fantasy debut.

I only wish I could write prose like this, or voice characters this convincingly. Now, be aware, the combat scenes are frequent and realistic, so it’s not bedtime listening.

Great language, great reader, great story

Good story and definitely a must listen if you liked the first but changing the narrator was a strange choice

Why switch the narrator?

The narrator of book one, Mr. Shapiro, is so unbelievably good for this part, that it defies logic as to why a switch was made for book two.

The author, Mr. Polansky, is also very skilled. I love his books. If you haven’t read/listened to “A City Dreaming”, as yet, it is also highly recommended. The narrator for THAT novel (Mr. Meyers) is likewise perfect.

However. This guy, Mat Godfrey. I have no idea what happened here, but man, swing and a miss. I get he had some rather large shoes to fill, but seriously, I’ve literally been waiting years for books two and three in this series to make it to Audible, and this is pretty disappointing.

GREAT novel, the narrator though...

Is Daniel Polansky the best writer I've ever seen? No, but he has created a fun but grounded fantasy world for his books to take place in as well as entertaining characters to fill it. The second book in the lowtown series was better than the first and had an even more hardboiled noir detective story that was almost like Kurosawa in its setup. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope that the next will also come to Audible.

As a side note, I disagree with the hate on the narrator. He pulls a good monotone and uncaring kind of attitude with his representation of the warden, which fits him well. Some characters sound similar or maybe a little too old, but overall, I think Matt Godfrey did a good job.

Enjoyed it even more than the first novel.

The two dimensional quality of listening to audiobooks compared to reading print versions makes a great story like this stand out even more, which is definitely helped by great narration I love Low Town's flawed anti-hero and his supporting cast of flawed idealists whose loyalty and friendships are constantly tested by the ugly realities of life. It's a refreshing break from the typical fantasy hero who overcomes every challenge while keeping his honor intact and goes on to fight the good fight with his trusty band of loyal companions.

Fantastic characters, Great listen.

I liked this volume as much as the first, but the narrator was a disappointment. The Warden sounded like Casey Kasem, which didn't really have the gravitas the previous narrator gave him. All the other characters except Adolphus had high voices, which was kind of weird, and some were basically indistinguishable from one another. The women's voices were worst of all. You'd think someone who mostly does high voices could do women's voices, but he couldn't. I got over my disappointment, and still enjoyed the story, but i hope the next volume has a better narrator.

Strong story, weak narrator

I love the mix of gangster stories in fantasy worlds. This series is quite good and reminds me of the Jhereg Cycle.

Wish there were more like it!

I love the author! His writing is incredible. This story is absolutely fantastic. My only complaint is the narrator. He is okay.. wish they could have used the same one from the first book. I would have quit listening to this book but the story and writing more than made up for the luke warm glass of milk that is the narrator.

Amazing story but....

The book is good but the reader made it even better. If you enjoyed book one you will probably like this one as well.

Excellent reader
