In China in 1911, all the women of good families follow this ancient tradition. But Ailin loves to run away from her governess and play games with her male cousins. Knowing she will never run again once her feet are bound, Ailin rebels and refuses to follow this torturous tradition. As a result, however, the family of her intended husband breaks their marriage agreement. And as she enters adolescence, Ailin finds that her family is no longer willing to support her.

Chinese society leaves few options for a single woman of good family, but with a bold conviction and an indomitable spirit, Ailin is determined to forge her own destiny. Her story is a tribute to all those women whose courage created new options for the generations who came after them.

Fascinating story about how one girl managed to avoid having her feet bound. Explains the background of the custom, and why it became important, as well as how she avoided it and how that choice influenced her life. Once you start, you won't want to quit until it's over.

Excellent read!

I really enjoyed all aspects of this book. Informative, entertaining, well performed. I am 65 years old, and found it a terrifically well told story. Very well written. Can’t say enough good about it! Read several other good ones lately, but this topped them all! The characters are so well formed, top entertainment! Interesting to learn more of other cultures. Always wondered about foot binding.

Interesting and informative and a great story. I learned a lot and enjoyed this book. I actually sat in my driveway to finish it!

Culturally Educational!

This book is such an education in history. I appreciated learning of a culture different from my own. I would suggest for anyone considering to read or listen to this book, please do so! I would like to search more of this type of book. The narrator was excellent. I hope to hear more of her narrations. The topic and the narration were excellent!

interesting way to tell an informational story

interesting way to tell an informational story, but wish it could have gone a bit further on certain subjects.

An insightful realistically meaningful book

This was a real story, meaning that the situations, characters, decisions, and actions all fit into a real world. However much of it is wholly accurate, it is very believable and therefore impactful without having to over dramatize every situation. I gained insight into cultural differences and social history. Interesting characters and a very authentic and relatable protagonist.

This book was honestly the best book I've ever read! The detail of the characters and their feelings was exquisite! I hope to read more books just like this one!

Nice little history lesson, geared to the YA audience. ( so it was a bit too juvenile for me ). Excellent narration.
