About this listen

Lady Grace Carpenter is ready to seize the day - or, rather, the night - with the most compelling man she's ever known. Marriage would mean losing guardianship of her beloved siblings, and surely no sane gentleman will take on seven children not his own. But if she can have one anonymous tryst with Mattheus, Earl of Worthington, Grace will be content to live out the rest of her life as a spinster.

Matt had almost given up hope of finding a wife who could engage his mind as well as his body. And now this sensual, intelligent woman is offering herself to him. What could be more perfect? Except that after one wanton night, the mysterious Grace refuses to have anything to do with him. Amid the distractions of the Season, he must convince her, one delicious encounter at a time, that no obstacle - or family - is too much for a man who's discovered his heart's desire.

The story line was very enjoyable. I'm glad I listened to the book. The narrator did a very good job with the voices. I'm not certain why, but sometimes, it dragged just a little. I think maybe the narrator's pace was a little slow for me, or maybe the dialogue needed to be a hair wittier. Not sure. It was good but not like, say, a Lisa Kleypas or Julia Quinn book read by someone like Susan Duerdon or Rosalyn Landor. Still - cute, and worth a listen. I'd have liked to have a 1-10 rating, this time, rather than 1-5. The narrator was a little better than a 3.

I'm just trying to bring out the points I'd want to consider in using my own credits.

Mixed feelings

Rarely do I leave a book unfinished, especially in audio form, as they are pricey.

However much I wanted to like this story, I found it lacking. The little hiccups that got in the way of the H/h were too easily overcome, and the plot plodded along with no true conflict until 3/4 of the way through when a “villain” was introduced.

I kept waiting to get to a point where I was snagged. Usually when listening to a book, interruptions annoy me, but I just popped out my earbuds without bothering to even hit pause because missing a few minutes didn’t make a difference.

The narrator didn’t help the situation much. Her methodical cadence was almost painfully slow.

I will say that the historical accuracy is much better than other romances set in this period, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to carry the book.

Slow and missing a “hook”

I thought I would love this story but after the first few hours it just dragged on and on.. the book is way too long and to dry at times, boring. As I write this review I have a little over 2 hrs left and I am so tempted to quit.. I’ve got a library of 175 books and I’ve only ever given up on 3, this would be 4 if I can’t finish it. I’m wondering if the other books by this author are better?

I really wanted to like this..

...but then it became so boring & uneventful, I kept passing by chapters with almost nothing missed. A whole chapter on home renovations? Another whole chapter on meeting other people who aren't part of the story? Ugh. The drama just died a slow death. The two characters I liked & were rooting for afyer the powerful first few chapters became like an old married couple discussing daily schedules & we got to experience the minutia of every detail of it. The wedding was almost incidental & noone cared anyway.

First Third was Great...

Overall, I enjoyed it. It entertains enough to keep you interested. The narration did not bother me as much as it did others.

It's fine

Loved the characters and the narrator did a wonderful job bringing the characters to live. I will enjoy more from the author

What a fun book

the story was good, however all the gentleman had on his mind for most of the book was having sex! some steamy scenes are great and keep my onterest but every time you turned around in this book he was having her like he could not control himself. these people were a little more restrained than this book leads you to believe.

a little over sexed
