Acerca de esta escucha

Join Thomas Merton in exploring life's great questions.

In this audio program, Merton will challenge you with questions about man's individual destiny, the human condition, prayer, and the nature of time. Originally delivered in 1965, these timeless lectures have been remastered and released as a set for your enjoyment. Delivered with wit and profound insight, these recordings will transport you into the abbey where Merton taught and imparted his spiritual wisdom.

In the first part, you will look at Greek tragedy and Chinese philosophy, both of which rose to prominence in the 5th and 6th centuries BC. The wisdom in Greek tragedy and Chinese thought is linked to that of the Scriptures, and in them we discover similar developments of thought. We see man acquiring a sense of identity and destiny as he comes to terms with freedom and responsibility.

In the second half, you will look at the concept of time and how it relates to prayer. The monastic life that Merton lived was one of constant prayer, in which time is experienced differently. Merton looks at such great literary works as Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time and William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury to explore the concept of time in our lives.

Journey with Thomas Merton with these erudite and essential lectures today.

Wonderful to hear Thomas Merton's voice. If gives us a better essence of his personhood.
Towards the end of his talk is the best part of the course . It's about time . How we let time control our lives instead of us controlling our time . How we let work control our destiny instead of us controlling our own destiny and time .

It's about time and what we choose to do with it.

Wonderful recordings of a wonderful thinker. Illuminating and informative. It’s short (roughly two hours), but absolutely worth it.

Merton on time and tragedy

I really wanted to be able to imagine the images and diagrams that he apparently showed to his original audience in the original recording. Unfortunately I do not know where to find these images as they do not appear to be included in this recording. If it could be included in a supplementary PDF or if there could be an indication towards the diagrams he’s referring to, that would be amazing.

The PDFs or images that he is referencing in the lectures are missing

I found the lectures very hard to follow as at times he seemed to ramble on and get sidetracked. Also at times, I found him hard to understand, but a lot of that was do to the poor quality of the recording.

So sadly, I got very little at all out of this book. I bought two others also, and hope that they are much better.

Very hard to follow.
