About this listen

Former cavalryman Quill McKenna takes pride in protecting the most powerful man in Stonechurch, Colorado: Mr. Ramsey Stonechurch himself. But the mine owner has enemies, and after several threats on his life, mines, and family, Quill decides to hire someone to help guard the boss' daughter. Only problem is the uncontrollable attraction he feels toward the fiery-haired woman who takes the job.

Calico Nash has more knowledge of scouting and shooting than cross-stitching, but she agrees to pose as Ann's private tutor while protecting her. But between her growing attraction to Quill and the escalating threats against the Stonechurches, Calico will soon have a choice to make - hang on to her hard-won independence or put her faith in Quill to create the kind of happy ending she never imagined....

IT WASN'T WRITTEN WELL FOR ME. I LISTEN TO MANY,MANY, WESTERN AND THIS ONE DIDN'T EVEN SOUNDED LIKE A WESTERN.

I HAD AN AWEFUL TIME FOLLING THIS STORY

This was such a good book! The prose, characters, and background were all so well written. And the narrator did an excellent job.
I simply wish Jo Goodman had another dozen books just like this one, ready to go.

I loved it!!

Written really well but needed a female voice for Calico. She sounded like an old woman. Story was really good though

Needed female voice

What aspect of Tom Zingarelli’s performance would you have changed?

Mr. Zingarelli's rendition of the heroine was less than desirable.

Any additional comments?

This is my first Jo Goodman novel and I enjoyed the story immensely. I will be looking into and indulging in her back list for the foreseeable future. The only downside was the narrator's portrayal of any female character. The heroine's voice comes out entirely too whiny for our no-nonsense heroine. I ended up having to read the last half the traditional way.

Wonderful Book

this was a great book. however, the. narrators voice made me imagine Quill and Calico as an old couple.. once you get past that, its pretty enjoyable.

great story.

Interesting characters make "This Gun For Hire" a keeper.

The beginning setting is in the salon of a house of ill repute where Quill McKenna stops to get a drink and is mesmerized by a dark haired 'lady of the night' who seems to be waiting for someone as her eyes take in the room, paying him no attention. One of the 'girls' approaches Quill and asks his name. He says, Quill McKenna. She says, what kind of name is Quill? He says, "mine"! (it loses something in the telling, but the exchange made me chuckle) Then a big man with an air of danger about him comes in; the man 'she' was waiting for. A hush falls across the room as the big man takes her upstairs. Quill fears for the dark haired girl and goes up after them. Events following Quill's ascension to the girls room where he hears a commotion and knocks on the girl's door had me laughing out loud.

Some parts move a little slow, but for the most part it keeps the listener engaged wondering who is behind the attempts on Quill's employers life and the accidents befalling his daughter.

Tom Zingarelli has a nice speaking voice and does women voices well. I enjoyed his performance.

This Gun For Hire has humor, mystery and romance--an entertaining listen.

A Good One!

I really liked this story and I want to rate it higher, but the narration nearly ruined it.

Do you remember watching Frosty the Snowman as a child? The man who narrated that was Burl Ives. His voice is deep and soothing, and lends itself to a child's show or a western novel. Now, imagine that voice saying, "He flicked his tongue over her nipple causing it to get rigid as his cock jumped against her". See my issue? Burl Ives / Jeff Bridges / James Earl Jones shouldn't be talking like that. This is a great western novel and a very good romance story, but it needs a less cowboy narrator.

Voice Vs. Story. hard to reconcile.

I think I might have enjoyed this book if it weren't for Me.Tom Zingarelli. His female voice is horrible. Better if he had used his normal voice and let us guess who was speaking. In audio books, the narrator is crucial.

Needs new narrator
