About this listen

Ann Cleeves is back with the sixth book in her Shetland series featuring Inspector Jimmy Perez, whom listeners will remember from Raven Black, White Nights, Red Bones, Blue Lightning, and Dead Water.

A group of old university friends leave the bright lights of London and travel to Shetland to celebrate the marriage of one of their friends. But one of them, Eleanor, disappears - apparently into thin air. It's midsummer, a time of light nights and unexpected mists. And then Eleanor's body is discovered lying in a small loch close to the cliff edge.

Detectives Jimmy Perez and Willow Reeves are dispatched to investigate. Before she went missing, Eleanor claimed to have seen the ghost of a local child who drowned in the 1920s. Her interest in the ghost had seemed unhealthy - obsessive, even - to her friends: an indication of a troubled mind. But Jimmy and Willow are convinced that there is more to Eleanor's death than they first thought. Is there a secret that lies behind the myth? One so shocking that someone would kill - many years later - to protect it?

Ann Cleeves' striking new novel is a quintessential whodunit with surprises at every turn.

I listened to this whole story in two days because it was that good. Read well, and written wonderfully. The characters are all interesting and complex and the plot was compelling, with interesting twists. Highly recommend it!

I adore Ann Cleeves stories, and this is a good one. However, the editing is awful with long pauses mid sentences that shouldn't be there. While I love the Scottish lilt, this performance was not great. Still, it doesn't change how much I love Jimmy Perez!

Good Story. Fair Production.

I love the Shetland mysteries and this was one I was not familiar with - I really couldn’t figure out who dunnit till the very end! Good job by the reader as well.

Loved it!

I’ve listened to EVERY audiobook from Ann Cleeves. For some reason, I had skipped this one from the Shetland series! First of all, yes, the audiobook didn’t get edited for the pauses in narration. I’m not sure why but there are long pauses. But just hang in there and keep going because this book is fabulous. Kenny is my favorite narrator. He nails Jimmy Perez! But he also is great as women, English accent gents, and thick accent Shetlanders. Ann does such a beautiful job of placing the reader right in the middle of the incredible landscape of the Shetland Islands. I feel myself walking right thru the story. Also, I find myself chuckling often with the humor that goes along with the beloved characters. Who couldn’t love Sandy?! This is a great book! Had me guessing till the end! I loved the story!!!!

My favorite!!

Gaps and pauses. Unusual as it was happening in the middle of chapters. Very irritating.

Good story- poor editing

This book is absolutely fantastic. A creepy and atmospheric mystery, literally each and every single character is well developed and interesting. The mystery is truly a mystery until the very end and is not even a little predictable. I am in awe of such writing. The woman is gifted. The narrator is also wonderful, the perfect amount of accent, enunciates clearly, never mispronounces anything, and emotes well. This is a classic and beautiful mystery. I wish more authors wrote like this. The characters and location should always be so thoroughly developed. This is a brilliant combo of contemporary mystery with a sprinkle of ghost story/folklore as well as a beautiful location and character study. Perfection. Thank you Anne Cleeves.

Another compelling story by Ann Cleeves. As with all her books in the series, by the time you finish you feel like you are a Shetlander. she weaves a masterful tale of mystery and suspense full of tantalizing clues and misdirection. The only disappointment was the quality of the audio recording. There were many unexplained and sudden gaps in silence and I often wondered if I was missing part of the story until the reader resumed the story. However, the narrator was excellent and as much as I enjoyed the previous reader In the series it was fun to hear the Scottish accent as a part of the production.

Great story! Quirky audio.

A good listen .. Strange events come together at the end, strong sense of place.
Kenny Blyth to is difficult to understand at first but his accent enhances the mysterious scenario.

Engrossing
