About this listen

In a long-unoccupied mansion, a new mother is confined to what was once a nursery. She is assured by her physician husband that it is a necessary cure to ease her "nervous depression." Isolated and powerless, she becomes obsessed with the peeling, sickly colored wallpaper. In it, she sees what no one else can: a prisoner desperate to escape its maddening design.

A condemnation of the patriarchy, The Yellow Wallpaper explores with terrifying economy the oppression, grave misunderstanding, and willful dismissal of women in late nineteenth-century society.

Revised edition: Previously published as The Yellow Wallpaper, this edition of The Yellow Wallpaper (AmazonClassics Edition) includes editorial revisions.

Great classic

This is a great story, short and captivating. There’s a lot of symbolism and metaphors. I liked that you’re reading through the lens of the one experiencing the mental deterioration. Interesting take!

This British narrator is good

What a difference a narrator makes. Almost gave up on this story with a poor narrator.

Reader apparently illiterate

Story is fascinating but reading is fraught with mispronunciations which spoil the flow of the narrative

Amazing narrator

Great story and the narrator was perfection! I would recommend listening to it. It’s short and sweet. I listened to it while I was cooking dinner.

A delightful descent into madness!

Loved it! I can tell the narrator did too! I only wish it was a full length novel!

Postpartum Affects...

Right away, you can tell this is a story about postpartum depression. As a reader, you are uncertain whether you should feel sorry for the narrator or fear her. It's sad to think that even in this modern 21st century that postpartum depression is still misunderstood. Perhaps this should be a recommended reading for everyone, but that's just my opinion.

Good reading of this classic

Nice reading of this classic short story. Although it's not at all a Halloween story, it's quickly making its way into my October traditions as its themes are such a perfect match for the season.

Weird

The narration was good but the story was weird. I guess if I really try hard, I can see how it might relate to the past or present day society oppression or whatever. I’m guessing if you want to break down the message behind the story for high school aged kids but other than that, it was not an enjoyable read.
