One of the best books ever written on parenting and life. What a changed country we would have if more read George McDonald. It is no wonder that he is one of C. S. Lewis's favorite authors and is honored by him in Lewis's Great Divorce.

A Masterpiece by Macdonald!

This story is filled to the brim with truth about humankind. George MacDonald paints a lovely picture of the tenderness, and justice of our Creator. It ought to be on every parents reading list.

One of the best anglophile Christian stories

this is one of the best angle file stories ever written. My family has listened to it several times on road trips. it was also the book I made my daughter read when she was 14 and needed very extreme intervening parenting. I recommended the book too many people who did not think that they would like it to adore it. You have not read it, you need to.

Remedies for oúr sick society

This book describes so many out of control children and dysfunctional parents that exist in our society today. It offers numerous ideas for loving education and discipline of children. It also has ideas for parents who need to grow up and reasonably raise their children.

My favorite so far

I am a fan of C.S. Lewis so I decided I wanted to read his favorite author. I started with his sermons which I liked then began reading his fairly tales. This is my favorite so far.

Great reader of great book

The reader gave color and animation to the characters. Macdonald is always good, and this book is no different. Weird ending though.

One of my all-time favorites

This book has been a favorite since childhood, and continues to be as an adult. It is one of the very few books which I have read multiple times, always benefited from, and never wearied of. It is a book both young and old can enjoy--and learn from. For like C.S. Lewis who read much of George MacDonald, it has a deep meaning under the beautiful tale.

Wisdom for all who read

I thought this would just be a fun fairytale- I should have known better! As an adult I could see bits of myself in these petulant girls. Yikes! Truly a story we could all learn from.

Am old story full of intrigue and meaning

I found out about this book when looking into C S Lewis. I can see why the author is a favorite of his. The story reads like an old fairy tale, but is so full of life's truths I enjoyed the lessons I learned from it, especially as a mother. I will definitely read this to my children again and again.
