About this listen

Reminiscent of the stories and styles of Harper Lee, Sue Monk Kidd, and Jan Karon, Pam Webber's The Wiregrass is an extraordinary tale about a magical time in an ordinary place full of lovable and unlovable characters. Infused with laughter, tears, love, loss, and hope, the story follows 14-year-old cousins Nettie, J.D., Eric, and Sam as they navigate the summer of their discontent, struggle with the physical and emotional turbulence of puberty and disappearing childhood, feel the excitement of first love, and run for their lives after they uncover an evil secret hidden in the shadows of the small town they love. Their story promises to stay with you a lifetime.

Loved this Book!

I laughed & cried through the hard copy & enjoyed it so much I wanted to share it with my non-reader friend. I tricked him into listening to the Audible version while on a long road trip & he was also hooked! The narrator did a great job of capturing the many voices. The story is so wonderfully woven, the characters as real as my family & friends. Webber understands children, she understands small towns & she understands Southerners. As other reviewers have said about The Wiregrass, as I read it, I was reminded of To Kill A Mockingbird: funny story, seriously important topic. I hope that this book helps to open eyes to the oppressed & abused.
I truly hope this book is turned into a screen play for a movie. I will be first in line to see it!!
Congratulations, Pam Webber, on a great novel. I’m looking forward to your next one!

Read this book!

Twice!
I read the book, when it was first released-with excellent critical reviews and awards-and loved it.
This Christmas The Wiregrass kept me company while I wrapped and baked and readied the house for the family. Wonderful surprise when a friend told me about a “great listen”, The Wiregrass!
Don’t miss this excellent story if growing up in our South, not so long ago.

Family

Supposedly this is about some of my family and I certainly recognized a few characters. As it took me back to my summers in a very small town in Alabama, it was both hilarious, intense & sad. I loved it.

Don’t miss this one !

What starts out as “typical” southern fiction about a childhood summer quickly evolves into a deep storyline and life lessons. The narrator does a great job except with the voice of Eric . She tries to hard trying to make his southern drawl believable and was border line annoying. This did not take away from the story itself !
