About this listen

Christina MacKinnon is secretly relieved to be a widow. She is equally desperate to distance herself from the clan of her dead husband, but as the heir to his estate—one she needs in order to support her siblings—she must first stave off both the advances and threats of the man next in line to inherit. It seems the only person she can turn to is a nearby stranger who seems inclined to help her. But he has a request….

Freshly returned from the war, Lachlan Kincaid has one aim: to see justice served to the MacKinnons for betraying his family years ago and depriving him of his inheritance. While biding his time at a nearby inn, he discovers the death of the MacKinnon laird—whose widow has inherited everything. The way to accomplish his goal is becoming more evident, but the path is murkier than he could have foreseen.

As their lives intersect, it becomes clear Lachlan and Christina have to join forces. But to do so courts more danger, and it requires a sacrifice from Christina.

Amazing story and narration!

Could not put this one down! The narrator was spot on and so so good. One of my favorite books but his author. Can’t wait for the next one in the series!

Good storyline

Good storyline and clean romance. The narrator was good but I do wish she used a bit more change to distinguish the characters of the book.

Good story but

I enjoyed the story but not the narrator. I sped her up to 1.3 and was able to tolerate her but don’t want to listen to any thing else she’s done.

a romantic and engaging listen

while it is true the narrator doesn't do different voices for the characters, it didn't detract from my enjoyment. she is native from Scotland and I appreciate that a lot more, than a narrator who may have done different voices but couldn't get the accent right. to be honest, sometimes I wish narrators would just read, as the male voices most of the time are not convincing anyway, and it takes me out of the story. that wasn't the case here, I enjoyed the narration fully.

the story is also deserving of 5 stars. I could tell the author was well versed in the history of the time and place and I truly appreciate that. it transported right into the story. I think the characters were well written too, and the author resisted the temptation to have them act one way and then another to fit the story better, rather having them stick to what would make sense for them. I much prefer that 10/10 times. I thought their backgrounds were interesting and made for characters that felt different from the usual but still relatable and people I could root for. I'm really glad I gave this book a chance and I can't wait to get to the rest of the series.

Should come with a trigger warning

None of the other reviews talk about how much rape is implied in this book. I try to avoid books with such themes for personal reasons, and I was not prepared for it in this book. I also thought the book was trying too hard to be interesting. It kept adding random side characters for seemingly no reason, just for intrige. All in all, I was not that impressed.

Meh

2.5. Not bad but very pedestrian. I never felt I got to know the characters. It was a very basic storytelling with no background or feeling, no visitor so background. There was no vital spark. The narrator was bad too. Not awful but very monotone with no acting or voices of character. It was a simple reading at best. Soft pads.
