About this listen

Charles Darwin was appointed naturalist aboard the H.M.S. Beagle, which left England in 1831 to map the coast of South America and then circumnavigate the globe. As Darwin explored, he came to dispute the idea that catastrophic upheaval created mountains and shaped the earth - and if geological change came slowly, could not living species also evolve the same way? As his journey continued to the Galapagos Islands, New Zealand, and Australia, his theories crystallized. Returning to England in 1836, he published his journal. It became an immediate best seller and a classic of natural history.Public Domain (P)1994 Recorded Books, Inc. Adventure Travel Evolution Travel Writing & Commentary Adventure South America Island

Editorial reviews

In a distinguished, kindly, and English-inflected voice that seems like it could belong to Charles Darwin himself, John Franklyn-Robbins performs the journal that established Darwin as the preeminent naturalist of his time, The Voyage of the Beagle. Undertaken when Darwin was in his early 20s, the voyage lasted nearly five years and took the young man through South America and into various islands in Australasia. At once a vivid and colorful memoir of exploration and adventure, The Voyage of the Beagle also introduces the listener to the budding ideas that would lead to Darwin’s shattering thesis, On the Origin of Species.

Good version ruined by poor quality audio

The title of the review says it all. This abridged version is very good and well read but the poor quality of the audio makes it almost unlistenable. Don't waste your time on this item.
