About this listen

On the day he retires, Inspector Ashwin Chopra inherits two unexpected mysteries.

The first is the case of a drowned boy, whose suspicious death no one seems to want solved. And the second is a baby elephant.

As his search for clues takes him across the teeming city of Mumbai, from its grand high rises to its sprawling slums and deep into its murky underworld, Chopra begins to suspect that there may be a great deal more to both his last case and his new ward than he thought.

And he soon learns that when the going gets tough, a determined elephant may be exactly what an honest man needs...

Critic reviews

"Garewal is a versatile narrator. He distinguishes between the wide cast of characters with a range of vocals including high pitches for annoying relatives, like Chopra's mother-in-law, and a singsong cadence for bumbling police officers. For this tale of mayhem, mystery, and corruption, Garewal weaves a spell that entrances the listener." (AudioFile)

Exotic

Exotic and fun. Set in Mumbai, it is a classic police procedural in an unusual local. I loved the characters and found Inspector Chopra's difficulty in transitioning to retirement to be well written. Even when he made rookie mistakes it was real as he negotiated a path where he had no real authority anymore. Add in his wife Poppy and his baby elephant Ganesh and you get a delightful read.

Enjoyable

This was a fun story to listen to. Very far removed from my life and the author added details to aid in my understanding. The narrator was good. I would recommend this book even if I did end up with the words "Inspector Chopra" running on repeat on my head and the story wasn't too deep nor the mystery too twisty.

A fascinating journey through present-day Mumbai with an excellent guide, an author who clearly knows and loves the city. Serious topics add substance and weight to a charming story with memorable characters. I look forward to listening to the rest of the series!

Great read

Fun story! Excellent narrator. Inspector Chopra, his wife, his mother-in-law, his former co-workers, and his elephant combined to make this a delightful listen.

Very Enjoyable

A well written story with suspense and humor interwoven throughout. I felt like I was in India. The author gave an unvarnished yet loving loving view of the country his character lives in. The narrator was excellent! He had me caught up on the excitement. I look forward to reading the next in the series.

The Mumbai Detective and his Elephant

I was very taken with the setting and the main character. Not a suspenseful story or great mystery but a main character & his sidekick elephant to root for. Good narrator. I hope the author makes the wife less insipid as the books continue.

Happy to discover this author!

I absolutely loved listening to this book. The story is both compelling and adorable. I didn't have any trouble following along even though I was not familiar with some of the phrases used. Vaseem Khan expertly paints scenes, making the streets of Mumbai come to life in my mind. It didn't take long for me to deeply care for the welfare of the main characters. The narrator, Sartaj Garewal, also did a phenomenon job at voicing everyone.

I am happy I stumbled upon this book and want to listen/read the rest of this author's work.
