Andy Serkis is the key

I've tried many times to read this classic trilogy, failing on all occasions but one. That successful undertaking was driven forward by a burning need stirred up by Peter Jackson. If only, back then, Andy's Audible performances had already existed, I would have loved every moment of that experience. Alas, I did not.

Fast forward to 2024, when Andy Serkis brought unabashed joy, excitement, fear and sadness to my written Tolkien world. What a voice! Whilst Gollum's first words sent an absolute thrill through me, every other character was brought to life just as effectively.

I couldn't recommend an audiobook/reader combination more highly than LOTR read by Andy Serkis.

I wish Andy Serkis read all my favorite books. This installment in the story has lots of Smeagol in it, which Andy Serkis is iconic in performing, but he shines in every dialogue, poem and song.
