About this listen

An expatriate is beset by dark temptations in this tale by the author of The Talented Mr. Ripley: "Her best novel" (The New Yorker).

Set in Tunisia in the mid-1960s, this is the story of Howard Ingham, an American writer who has gone abroad to gather material for a movie too sordid to be set in America. Ingham is cool toward the girlfriend he left behind in New York - but his feelings start to change when she doesn't answer his increasingly aggravated letters and the filmmaker who hired Ingham fails to show in Tunisia.

Amid the tea shops and alleys of the souk, the sun-blasted architecture, and the beaches and hotels frequented by international tourists, Ingham tries to pass the time by working on a writing project. But a series of peculiar events - a hushed-up murder, a vanished corpse, secret broadcasts to the Soviet Union - will pull him in and may finally put his increasingly fragile sense of morality to the test.

Recommend

Thank you, Audible, for having so many Patricia High smith books. I've enjoyed 4 in the last 2 months. This one is very good. Saying anything more would be a spoiler.

Unforgettable

I miss the end of the story and will be miserable for a long spell as if losing something of myself feeling much as she did for ending the story as explained within. Her riveting exploration of the human psyche delivered within conversations involving many characters are uniquely humane and frighteningly spot on. Worth a relisten for certain. Must say I’m surprised and somewhat shocked that more of her stories aren’t scanned for Kindle or synched with Audible. Someone up the ladder should consider doing this.

Engrossing

Captivated from start to finish. Twisted and demented like her best.

Performance is good, some accent merging.

Not interesting

The characters were okay but thought the plot was dull. Enjoyed her other books more.

Dull

I was extremely disappointed in this book. Nothing ever happens! I kept waiting for SOMETHING but all they ever seemed to do was have drinks, lunch and dinner. This could have been a good short story perhaps, but this was torture as it went on and on with no action and just repetitive drinking and dining. I generally am a Highsmith fan, but this one left me cold. The narration was good in parts. I enjoyed his Adams voice but as the book went on, Ingham began to talk just like Adams. And the girl spoke with that same exaggerated cadence. It got to be almost funny. I only kept listening because I thought this is Highsmith and surely there will be an exciting resolution. Nothing.
