Publisher's summary

As he looked at life...

...surrounded by the trappings of success...

Austin wondered, is there anything else?

He made it to the top. As CEO of an asteroid mining company, Austin has accomplished everything he ever wanted in business. Now, he needs more. To get away he turns to a fantasy video game.

Is virtual reality the answer?

Should he pick, elf, gnome, caster, or swordsman?

He just wants peace and quiet, play as a dwarf, build a house, do some smithing and character building. His idea of the perfect fantasy game. Then he learns their secret.

Deceit hides in the shadows.

And the truth is all around.

Austin will need to level up.

If he gets caught, it means death. He’ll need help along the way. How can he convince anyone they’re slaves in a bigger game and stay under the radar? If Earth was a simulation and the game was real...

Who can he trust?

You’ll get hooked on this first book (of 11) in the Emerilia LitRPG series, because the characters grow and advance in the most believable of ways and the plot twists are fantastic. Any sufficiently advanced virtual reality makes it indistinguishable from reality.

Get it now.

fabulous first book

This book was very exciting 1st book series. I cannot wait to listen to the other books. The character development and plot were set up nicely while explaining the new world in detail.

Addictive Story

I find it hard to stay focused and awake when reading, but the narrator brings this exciting RPG story alive. Good Fantasy Sci-fi. Worth the price, with as many hours of entertainment as about 8 movies for the price of 3 of them. I just wish I could afford to buy them faster since I go through a book well before getting a monthly credit.

You need this

This was a very good written book. I would highly recommend it. the character creation is very good the story is great and it's one of those few stories that you actually care about the characters and what they're doing and what they become.

Stats, story, stats, recap, story, stats, recap

Overview: The plot is enjoyable and relaxing, but writing will grind on you.

Writing: Every other minute you will hear more stats being listed and then every other chapter has a mini recap Incase you for what has happened thus far. The book is also heavy on how the mechanics of how the game works.

Characters: Character development happens early on, but barely evolves afterwards.

Good through the whole series

I always hate starting a new long series without knowing that I'm going to enjoy the whole thing. I just wanted to let those like me know that the series is consistant - if you read the first book and enjoy it, you will enjoy all the rest. Warning though, Audible does not have all the books yet (as of Aug 6,2018), so if you want to finish it in a timely manner, you will need to read the last few books.

Everything was great

The only drawback was how serious everything is. It wouldn't hurt to crack a joke everyone now and then.

this book was really good but it was so long I had to reread parts because I fell asleep trying to read it straight through in one go.

Brilliant and innovative plot and world crafting.

I am so happy to have found an new author to listen to, that is not just recycling a popular plotline and calling it their own. Chatfield's story and plot devices are not predictable and overplayed. The world and characters are fully fleshed out, drawing the audience in as if one was watching a hit series.

Amazing book

I’ve read some fantastic books in my life but this puts others to shame. It’s witty, original with a good story and whole hearted characters that you can follow easily. It actually brought me to tears in some parts. Such good narration. Lotsa cussing and hidden jokes I didn’t care for but good!
