Publisher's summary

Hearts and loyalties collide in this electrifying new YA series from New York Times best-selling author Jennifer A. Nielsen. Nothing is as it seems in the kingdom of Antora. Kestra Dallisor has spent three years in exile in the Lava Fields, but that won't stop her from being drawn back into her father's palace politics. He's the right-hand man of the cruel king, Lord Endrick, which makes Kestra a valuable bargaining chip. A group of rebels knows this all too well - and they snatch Kestra from her carriage as she reluctantly travels home.

The kidnappers want her to retrieve the lost Olden Blade, the only object that can destroy the immortal king, but Kestra is not the obedient captive they expected. Simon, one of her kidnappers, will have his hands full as Kestra tries to foil their plot, by force, cunning, or any means necessary. As motives shift and secrets emerge, both will have to decide what - and who - it is they're fighting for.

Jennifer A. Nielsen introduces us to an unforgettable new heroine in this epic tale of treachery and intrigue, love and deceit.

Another amazing novel by Jennifer Nielsen! 💕

Ever since I finished the Ascendance series (my favorite series ever, defenetly recommend) I was desperate to find another series just as good. And then I found a Traitors game and may I just say it was amazing. I am now going on to read the second novel, the deceivers heart and I can’t wait to read more adventure by Jennifer a Nielsen. I highly recommend this book!!! I am completely obsessed 🤩🤩🤩

Exciting

I love how Jennifer can always weave a story line with twists that you never fully expect. The way that she connects-the-dots at the end of her books, and answers your lingering questions, is done with such skill that it seems like forensic science and art have perfectly united.

Absolutely horrid

Plot had so much potential. But between being able to guess every character's move and having 2D characters with no personality: it ruined it all. Plus the narrators are very monotonous. I wish I could get a refund on how much I hated this book.

Disappointing

I enjoy YA fiction, and I enjoyed Jennifer Nielsen's other series, Ascendance, so I expected to like this one as well. It's a step backwards for her, though. The general plot had potential, though a little reminiscent of The Princess Bride, but the writing is choppy and the performance by Jesse Vilinsky makes it that much worse. She has a rapid, staccato style and I kept thinking I must be listening at 1.5x speed, but nope, she just rushes the delivery in a distracting way. The chapters alternate between first person POV of Kestra and Simon, and Michael Curran-Dorsano's performance was pleasant. I wish he had done the whole book by himself except for the fact that I might not have been able to tell which character's head we were in, were it not for the gender of the narrator. The writing for Kestra and Simon sounds the same and there is FAR too much time spent on their whirlwind "enemies to soulmates" journey. Loathing to love in under 72 hours?! I found myself repeatedly rolling my eyes because we kept hearing the same internal debates over and over, ad nauseam: "He/She's my enemy. I can't trust him/her. But I can't understand these irrepressible feelings I have. Do I love him/her? How can that be? I will love him/her regardless." The characters are very one-dimensional and their motivations are hard to care about. In fact, I think I'm insulted on behalf of young adult readers everywhere. They think about other things besides relationship angst. It's hard for me to bail mid series, but I won't be using credits to finish this one.
