Invaluable Collection with Smaller Texts Too

Most people interested in this area of ancient literature know the Meditations, probably the most popular book outside the Bible. And Seneca’s Letters from a Stoic are pretty well known and have stood the test of time, so the offer a critique of those in the 21st Century would be kind of ridiculous. The Discourses of Epictetus (slave turned philosopher) is lesser known and of interest as it influenced Marcus Aurelius, so there is an evolution of thought there.
The Enchiridion is fragmentary and full of lots of bits of wisdom. Overall enjoyable to listen to. The Shortness of life by Seneca is much lighter than his Letters for a Stoic and is a very practice guide, so applicable today, proving that people have not changed that much in 2000 years (except the were probably a lot smarter).

Timeless Manual

This collection is like a manual for life. Reading Meditations felt like having a conversation with a wise mentor, reminding me to stay calm and focused no matter what’s happening around me. Seneca’s letters hits deep especially the ones about time and how we waste so much of it on things that don’t matter. And Epictetus? His is a no-nonsense guy, an approach to life is exactly what I needed to hear. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed or stuck, these books will shift your perspective and help you build real mental toughness. This isn’t just philosophy, it’s a mindset shift that can change how you live every day

So many great ideas packed in!

This collection contained a lot of really good ideas that I never would have thought about before. I think the thing I’ll take away the most if I had to narrow it down would be the philosophy on time. It really is fascinating to think about how much time I’ve wasted on silly endeavors and I want to make the most of it now!

Serves as both a guide and a mentor

Jeffrey Ito’s narration is engaging and clear, making these ancient texts highly accessible. Meditations by Marcus Aurelius feels like a deeply personal reflection on virtue and self-discipline, while Seneca’s Letters from a Stoic and On the Shortness of Life provide practical lessons on time, adversity, and simplicity. Epictetus’ Discourses and Enchiridion emphasize the power of mindset and rational thinking, encouraging listeners to focus on what they can control.

At 38 hours, this is a comprehensive deep dive into Stoic philosophy, but the pacing allows for easy absorption, whether you’re a newcomer or a seasoned Stoic practitioner. The teachings remain as relevant today as they were over 2,000 years ago, offering a refreshing perspective on modern struggles.
