Lobsang T. Rampa
About this listen
T. Lobsang Rampa was preordained to be a Tibetan priest, a sign from the stars that could not be ignored. When he left his wealthy home to enter the monastery, his heart was filled with trepidation, with only a slight knowledge of the rigorous spiritual training and physical ordeal that awaited him.
This is his story, a hauntingly beautiful and deeply inspiring journey of awakening within Chakpori Lamasery, the temple of Tibetan medicine. It is a moving tale of passage through the mystic arts of astral projection, crystal gazing, aura deciphering, meditation, and more - a spiritual guide of enlightenment and discovery through the opening of the all-knowing "Third Eye".
This is the first a series of groundbreaking books written by T. Lobsang Rampa, which catapulted him to international fame in the 1960s and '70s. Rampa's stories touched the hearts of the millions and put them in touch with Eastern philosophy for the very first time. Whatever one might say about him, there is no doubt that Rampa played an important role in bringing Buddhism to the West. His continuing popularity is a result of his deep knowledge of the human psyche and spirit, and his true understanding of the eight-fold path of the Buddha.

According to Barker, who first published the book in the 1960s, Rampa's claim that his body had been taken over by a Tibetan Buddhist monk was in no way disproved. In fact, Barker provides a letter from a Tibetan Buddhist scholar stating that Rampa's writings about the inner workings of Tibetan Buddhism were quite accurate and actually revealed closely guarded secrets of the Himalayan monasteries.

What is karma? Most people understand karma as a balance sheet of good and bad deeds, virtues and sins. The mechanism that decrees that we cannot evade the consequences of our own actions. In reality, karma has nothing to do with reward and punishment. Karma simply means action: your action, your responsibility. It isn’t some external system of crime and punishment, but an internal cycle generated by you. Accumulation of karma is determined only by your intention and the way you respond to what is happening to you.

Story
You define life or it defines you. In Shawn Speakman’s case, it was both. Lacking health insurance and diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2011, Shawn quickly accrued a massive medical debt that he did not have the ability to pay. That’s when New York Times best-selling author Terry Brooks offered to donate a short story that Shawn could sell to help alleviate those bills—and suggested he ask the same of his other writer friends. Unfettered is the result: An anthology built in order to relieve that debt, featuring short stories by some of the best fantasy writers in the genre.

Story
From a variety of masterfully rendered perspectives, these six stories depict people at painful odds with the world around them. A wife can only surrender to a desert night by betraying her husband. An artist struggles to honor his own aspirations as well as society's expectations of him. A missionary brutally converted to the worship of a tribal fetish is left with but an echo of his identity. Whether set in North Africa, Paris, or Brazil, the stories in Exile and the Kingdom are probing portraits of spiritual exile, and man's perpetual search for an inner kingdom.

Story
A wildly comic send-up of Irish literature and culture, At Swim-Two-Birds is the story of a young, lazy, and frequently drunk Irish college student who lives with his curmudgeonly uncle in Dublin. When not in bed (where he seems to spend most of his time) or reading, he is composing a mischief-filled novel about Dermot Trellis, a second-rate author whose characters ultimately rebel against him and seek vengeance. From drugging him as he sleeps to dropping the ceiling on his head, these figures of Irish myth make Trellis pay dearly for his bad writing.

High in the rarefied air of the Himalayas stands the great Lamasery of Potala. Here, as a young boy, T. Lobsang Rampa came to study the teachings of the Lord Buddha. Through the eyes of this young acolyte, we learn of the life of Prince Gautama and his discovery of the Middle Way, the Four Noble Truths, and the state of Nirvana. The dying man jerked and then collapsed. His body twitched, and then lay still. The Lama nodded again to the acolyte, who touched flame to the third stick of incense. "Spirit now released from the suffering body," said the Lama, "pay attention before setting out on your journey; pay attention for I shall detail to you the steps you must take, and the path you must follow..." The fourth stick of incense was lit, and the smoke trailed upwards, as if it had been drawn in blue-gray chalk, straight as a pillar in the almost airless room...

Read the book years ago. Listened to it recently.
I highly recommend this book. It was a whole different experience from when I read the book in the 80’s. This book encourages much personal reflection and I found this book was a springboard to connections in some personal way to the honeycomb of experiences, feelings, strengths, weaknesses, successes and failures in my own life relating to spiritual and emotional growth.

An excellent story, performance needs editing.
This story kept me in it hours in the car, I finished it in one day!
The performance however needs some editing. Listening in the car, the Narrator's voice was dull and raspy. It was very difficult to understand and I had to rewind constantly. Also every S that he utters is an extremely sibulant whistling sound. Very annoying indeed. Most of this could be fixed with proper production editing.

Gripping story, wonderfully detailed descriptions,
mindful, autobiographical, mystical, and adventuresome. A tale told better than many award winning books I've read . . .
It's the little details throughout that captured and held my interest and gave gravity to this book. And the story unfolds in a way that I wanted to know what would happen next.
I see that these audio versions have come out rapidly since last year, but I wish the third book written . . . the one that explains how the transition into the British body happened was already narrated. I have finished the first book - The Third Eye - and am well into the second book - Doctor From Lhasa - but at this time the third book is not yet available on Audible, although there are some other books narrated out of order.
I found a listing of 19 books, in the order of the years published, at a website dedicated to the author . . . lobsangrampa dot org. That should be helpful in deciding which books to listen to first, second, third . . .
I hope the other books will be narrated soon - it's exciting and very interesting listening - it's one of the books where if something interrupted my attention I made sure to go back and catch every word.
The narrator is fantastic and does voices, like the first person voice of the author, and those of wizened old monks who were his teachers, very well. The humorous undercurrent at times is delightful, although there were some shockingly harsh experiences related too. Life in Tibet was not easy, or safe.
There are a few small editing/production glitches where someone should have been paying attention and not let a few words get repeated as the narrator corrected himself and quickly reread a portion. But the fascinating story and excellent writing far outweigh these tiny errors and the book is well worth the credit. I think I want the hard copies too since there was reference to an illustration.

Fantastic
Although some pieces may be fiction, I believe this books was thoroughly enjoyable. It is probably not historically accurate, and some of the claims made by the author were outlandish. The narrator in particular was exceptional at setting the atmosphere for the read. The book has such a great ending and showcases the author's great storytelling abilities.

This sounded too good to be true! Oh it was :(
Yetis, alien, powers of clairvoyance/invibility/levitation AWESOME! He will tell you over and over again that the horrible media will spread lies about him, oh yeah you mean the “lie” that there is no recorded Tibetan monk named Tuesday Lobsang, the lie that the author “monk” is a white plumber from the UK. You learn that fact in the following book because after this book comes out people then find out who really wrote this POS

interesting until I realized it's fiction
while the title is categorized under nonfiction autobiographical, a 10-second search reveals it is wildly considered to be fraudulent. the author is not Lobsang Rampa, he is a British plumber who fled to Ireland and spent the rest of his life in canada. even the Dalai llama was asked about him and replied there is no such person on record and his story is complete fiction. the author later admitted that he hit his head and woke up channeling Lobsang Rampa. I feel cheated and want my money back. if I want fictional spiritual books I will read a real classic like sidhartha
