About this listen

The short-story collection that was adapted into a three hour mini-series on PBS's American Playhouse, starring Uta Hagen, Harold Gould, Doris Roberts, Anne Meara, and Jerry Stiller.

With time running short, these intrepid residents of Sunset Village in Florida continue to thirst for life and love.

The Sunset Gang is as lively, fun, and courageous a group as you'll find anywhere this side of the Last Reward. The fact that you'll find them at Sunset Village, a condominium retirement community in Florida - where an ambulance siren is the theme song and cycling at a stately pace is strenuous exercise - does not mean that they are ready to pack it all in. Not by a long shot.

Indeed, sex and romantic love keep Sunset Village bubbling with activity. If you were to walk down one of its well-tended paths, you might spot Jenny and Bill sitting on a bench, acting like young lovers, and never suspect that they are married - to other people! And at the pool, Max Bernstein, with an expertise that comes from five decades of skirt chasing, is singling out attractive widows.

But the true beating heart of Sunset Village is the love of family and friends. Widowed Molly Berkowitz learns that although her son and daughter may be failures in the eyes of the world, they are well worth bragging about, and Isaac Kramer begins to feel truly at home when the gray-haired boys down at the Laundromat start calling him by his old neighborhood nickname, "Itch".

In America, where "old" is a dirty word, people over 65 are often shut out as if growing old were some kind of contagious disease. But you cannot shut the Sunset Gang out of your heart. If you let them in, they will teach you a lot about living-a subject on which, after all, they are the experts.

Funny

I got this story via audiobook boom and this is my voluntary review. This was a funny and entertaining set of stories of life in a retirement home filled with people who are basically determined to live the best life they can before they die. I didn't think I was going to enjoy them when I first started listening but as each story progressed I became involved in the escapades of this lively bunch of seniors. A feel-good funny set of stories. The narrator was good for the stories.

Retirement?

This story was a stark reminder that retirement is not the end of adventure. When I pictured a retirement community in South Florida I imagined a peaceful community with golf carts, bingo, crochet, early dinners and naps. Not the case with the Sunset Gang!

This cast of characters was a pleasant surprise with as much drama, scandal, canoodling and sheer entertainment as my 20s. I enjoyed learning about the residents, their daily lives and their history. I am looking forward to this chapter in my own life more now than ever! Definitely worth a credit!

The only caution I can share is to make sure you can concentrate on this book when you sit down to listen. It is not the type of story you keep playing in the background as you work or do anything that pulls attention away from the characters. There were so many different stories and characters that I sometimes found I was distracted then suddenly had no idea who I was hearing or what was happening. Once I rewound I found that the changing chapters were obvious, I had simply not been giving it my full attention when we skipped to the next residents. So, take my advice and listen when you can truly hear it. You will be glad you did!

Colleen's narration was perfect for this book and I couldn't have imagined a better choice. Her accents, tone and inflections kept these characters lifelike and enjoyable. All around a great experience.

I was given a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. This did not influence my review in any way.

You're Only As Young You Feel

I enjoyed listening to The Sunset Gang. The stories were full of love, life, and drama. I loved that the folks at the retirement center were Jewish. I love hearing Yiddish. This is an important work of literature written by Warren Adler.

Colleen Crimmins' performance was outstanding. I can't imagine listening to anyone else narrate this. She was absolutely perfect for the characters. Top-notch and definitely recommended.

The Sunset Gang

The Sunset Gang: Warren Adler

A collection of slice of life pieces at The Sunset Retirement Community, a Jewish center in Florida. A funny yet not novel.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Colleen Crimmins accents were what made the book come to life.
