About this listen
This title contains strong language and mature themes, including references to sexual violence, abuse of minors and animals, and suicide, that some listeners may find upsetting. Discretion is advised.
I just met my new son-in-law . . . And he’s my ex-husband.
They’re here. I watch them arrive from the kitchen window. My pregnant daughter and her new husband. They’ve barely known each other six months.
I greet him with a tight smile that he recognizes as fake.
Luke is no good for my beautiful, fragile Cerys. He’ll break her heart. I know that because he broke mine — when he was married to me.
I don’t know what he’s after. But I’m going to make it my business to find out.
Don’t underestimate me. I’ll do anything to keep my daughter safe.

Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

I thought moving to this quiet cul-de-sac was the fresh start my husband and I needed, escaping the noise of our cramped flat in Hounslow. I left India and all that was familiar for a new life with him in England. But my husband works all hours, leaving me alone in a house that doesn’t feel like a home. Our neighbours notice the bruises on my arms. They draw the obvious conclusions. They seem kind, but they’re hiding something. I just can’t shake the feeling that someone is always watching me . . . waiting. My husband’s working late. Again. That’s when I see it.

Story
American student Alice Snyder was excited to be spending the summer in Scotland, working as an au pair for the Davidson family at their remote lodge. But one month after she arrived, Alice disappeared without a trace. Now, the new au pair Melanie has arrived—and soon notices that the Davidsons are a bit odd. There are the strange comings and goings at night, the creepy paying guests, and the sinister Uncle Gray who makes her flesh crawl. Then there's the worrying scratch marks on the floor of the au pair's bedroom. Did Alice try to barricade herself in? What could she have been so afraid of?

Excellent & Unusual
While you can figure out who Carelis is half way through, you still want to see how it happened and see the story unfold. I could listen to the narrator for Beth read the dictionary because of her mellifluous voice and dialect.
Great story, very cleverly written so I'll check for more books by the author.

Amazing
What a good book. Amazing storyline. I wouldn’t have been so protective of my daughter after she married my ex husband though.

The son in law
Overall the book was okay. The daughter marrying her mom’s ex husband was wild. The fact that she was so dense and couldn’t see that this guy was using her and her mother.

Liked it a lot!
No slow bits, plenty of twists, when you thought it was one way, it would 180. Kept me interested all the way.

Very convoluted plot. The Son in Law
I enjoyed most of the details in the book. Narration was good and the timeline was a little confused in the end. Overall a very good listen.

Weird story
Knew it would be weird due to the fact that her son in law was her ex… but the story just proceeded to get weirder and then just plain dumb

a good story but took so long to get there
The melodious accents of the narrators were great, but this was a real slog to get through. There are lots of 'filler' chapters that don't seem to contribute to the plot at all. The coddled, whiny daughter was infuriating, and I dreaded her chapters. The twists right at the end were good but it took sooo long to get there.

What the hell?
If you would love to waste hours of your life that you can't get back while rolling your eyes, cringing, and saying WTF?!! the entire time, then this is the book for you. The daughter is unbelievably dense, to the point of pushing me to want to be violent. I could not stop listening just out of morbid curiosity and a need for suffering, apparently. IDk... good luck.
