About this listen

Audible's 2014 Narrator of the Year Julia Whelan performs one of Hans Christian Andersen's most beloved fairy tales, The Snow Queen. This classic tale is a fantastical fable of two dear friends - one of whom goes astray and is literally lost to the north woods, while the other undertakes an epic journey to rescue him. This charming, strange, and wonderful story is a timeless allegory about growing up and the challenges of staying true to one's self, and it served as the wintry inspiration for the blockbuster hit Frozen.

Fascinating

What made the experience of listening to The Snow Queen the most enjoyable?

You could tell that some of the ideas were a little lost in translation, but it was all very charming. This is the kind of story that should be read aloud to you.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Snow Queen?

The little robber girl was hilarious, all at once sweet and bratty and dangerous.

Which scene was your favorite?

The random stories told by each of the flowers in the old witch's garden, each a beautiful little vignette

Any additional comments?

Thanks for sharing this with everyone, Audible. The movie, Frozen, was inspired by this story but almost completely unrelated, so it was great to hear the original.

A Moment of Holiday Cheer

First of all I appreciate Audible.com offering this as a free listen during this Christmas season! Not only that but it was timely with the big fame of Disney's "Frozen" all this year. While the stories are only loosely tied together, I was able to see a few elements here and there that appeared to have been borrowed from.

While I'm not a big fan of this kind of writing or storytelling, it was very well done and performed.

What Are Friends For

This was a lovely free gift from Audible for the holidays so naturally I waited until it was in the mid-70s & sunny outside to listen.

It had been a long time since I had heard the original Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale and I thought I remembered the Snow Queen being much scarier. It is amazing how a few decades will change your perception of what is truly frightening.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tale, especially as narrated by the incredible Julia Whelan. Many thanks Audible.

Audible gift - Worth it!

I, like many others here, received this story free on Audible.com.

I thought it was delightful! I can see where the basis for the movie Frozen was picked up. Obviously, a few changes made, but still, the similarities were there.

It was about as long as my commute to work and I really enjoyed it

Excellent Freebie

This was a free holiday gift from Audible. I am probably the only person who never saw Frozen, which I hear is based on this story. I enjoyed this short fable and the characters. Listening to it in the coldest winter on record here and hearing about the warmth after being in the Snow Queen's palace made me feel hopeful that our spring is right around the corner as well!!

Got Frozen?

Cute classic tale. Nothing like what I remembered from childhood. Excellent narration. The story felt incomplete, or maybe I just didn't get it.

Inspiration for Frozen?

I like fairy tales, and this one is fine and well read. It's a pretty far stretch between Frozen the movie and these stories. It was advertised as "inspiration". Just not what I expected.
