Amazing story!

This book really brings to life the History of Jewish life in Poland. It is heartfelt and takes the listener into the emotional heart of what it was like. An amazing love story, depicting the struggles of desire & passion with faith & belief.

Recuing mankind within

Indeed this is a 5 star audiobook.

'The Slave' is an utmost interesting reading. Mr. Singer's accounts of the bondage created in adverse times by this 'unorthodox couple' sheds lights on modern day relationships as well. His picture of the state of life in Poland 300 years ago is a revelation. The lessons in 'The Slave' are applicable to everyone - rescuing the mankind within, struggling to keep the faith while those considered 'faithful' do not present us good reasons to do so and finding human goodness despite everything.

The narrators are almost impeccable - wish they had narrated other audiobooks.

Introspective, miraculous masterpiece

I loved The Slave. More than a story of a man and woman, it is a story of life’s journey of the self, following ones own path, and remaining true to spiritual beliefs in the face of ridicule and hate. I am transformed from reading it.

The two narrators were balanced. Having both made the novel move in an animated way.

singer is the greatest storyteller ever

What a great book to read during Passover time! Particular kudos to Miss Sallows for her amazing rendition of the woman kidnapped by cossacks.

A touching thought provoking story which reflects early life for Jews and their journeys and laws.

Forbidden Love

This is a wonder novel about a passion forbidden by both religion and law. The author really makes the characters come alive. I recommend it highly.

True love, genuine piety

This book seemed so short when it ended. This is to the credit of the author. He includes many events and a vast amount of local color, but he doesn't drag things out excessively.

Jacob and Sarah-Wanda become united in life and, eventually, in death. I particularly appreciate how Singer treats the matter of conversion to Judaism in an environment where it was a capital offense. The reactions of the local Jewish community and the local Polish noble are realistic. The ultimate resolution of Sarah's status is a blessing.

The Slave

It's tortuous trying to get through this book. Not to my liking at all. Full of supertitions, orthodoxy and bloody scenes of hatred, murder and filthy habits. ugh. Wish I had my credit back.
