Publisher's summary

The instant national best seller

The standout memoir from NBA powerhouse Andre Iguodala, the indomitable sixth man of the champion Golden State Warriors.

Andre Iguodala is one of the most admired players in the NBA. And fresh off the Warriors’ third NBA championship in the last four years, his game has never been stronger.

Off the court, Iguodala has earned respect, too - for his successful tech investments, his philanthropy, and increasingly for his contributions to the conversation about race in America. It is no surprise, then, that in his first book, Andre, with his cowriter Carvell Wallace, has pushed himself to go further than he ever has before about his life, not only as an athlete but about what makes him who he is at his core.

The Sixth Man traces Andre’s journey from childhood in his Illinois hometown to his Bay Area home court today. Basketball has always been there. But this is the story, too, of his experience of the conflict and racial tension always at hand in a professional league made up largely of African-American men; of whether and why the athlete owes the total sacrifice of his body; of the relationship between competition and brotherhood among the players of one of history’s most glorious championship teams. And of what motivates an athlete to keep striving for more once they’ve already achieved the highest level of play they could have dreamed.

On drive, on leadership, on pain, on accomplishment, on the shame of being given a role, and the glory of taking a role on: This is a powerful memoir of life and basketball that reveals new depths to the superstar athlete, and offers tremendous insight into most urgent stories being told in American society today.

Critic reviews

“The best basketball memoir since Bill Russell’s Go up for Glory...a sports memoir for the ages.” (Booklist, starred review)

“A riveting read by one of the NBA’s sharpest minds.” (Forbes)

“Iguodala's story is a compelling and important one that provides a glimpse into what people of color face, from little boys to the height of stardom, in a country ‘designed to wreak absolute havoc on the confidence of black people.’” (Shelf Awareness)

Real

Andre Iguodala played at the U of A where I live. I am native Tucsonan and I thought he would have said a few more things about Tucson but he didn’t. It seemed like his experience here wasn’t that great and it made me a little sad. I really did like his recollection and detail of things and how he explained his emotions. I think he did a great job and I love his character.

Such a great book! There is so much we don’t know about life playing in the NBA!

This book is fantastic. As a die hard Warriors fan my entire life, Andre Iguodala coming to the Warriors was a huge deal. He quickly became one of the fan favorite players, and this memoir will make you love him even more! You get to experience the real personal side of Andre and all the great stories from his journey throughout the league. You also get to see the struggles and hardships that NBA players deal with year in and year out. I would highly recommend this book to anyone! It’s a very easy read and I truly, truly enjoyed it.

Entertaining & informative read.

Just finished this book and boy was it interesting. In the end I think the Warriors did Andre so wrong but according to the book that’s how this industry goes. I’ll miss watching Andre as a warrior but so thankful he gave us this gem of a book to peak inside the world we’re all so enthralled with. Andre is a great orator and I enjoyed every minute of him telling his story. Would love to hear more from him as his career progresses.

A candid look into the game's environment.

A look into the human element of the game by a bright, insightful man. The author clearly has much more to share than basketball brilliance.

great stories for basketball fans

Andre shares some anecdotes, opinions, and reflections. he doesn't go into a lot of details about games, seasons and playoffs. so if you want a play by play from a player's perspective, you won't find that. Andre shares a lot of reflections and opinions about race, society, and life in the NBA. The book gives me a different perspective of who Andre is and what's important to him.
