Publisher's summary

This program is read by actor Brenock O’Connor (Game of Thrones, Derry Girls).

"A fast-paced carnival of setbacks and skullduggery that reminds me of... me! Charming from the first twist to the last."—Scott Lynch

Set in a city of traders and thieves, monsters and murderers, this thrilling epic fantasy debut is a must-hear for fans of Nicholas Eames and Joe Abercrombie.

Lukan Gardova is a cardsharp, academy dropout, and—thanks to a duel that ended badly—the disgraced heir to an ancient noble house. His days consist of cheap wine, rigged card games, and wondering how he might win back the life he threw away.

When Lukan discovers that his estranged father has been murdered in strange circumstances, he finds fresh purpose. Deprived of his chance to make amends for his mistakes, he vows to unravel the mystery behind his father's death.

His search for answers leads him to Saphrona, fabled city of merchant princes, where anything can be bought if one has the coin. Lukan only seeks the truth, but instead he finds danger and secrets in every shadow.

For in Saphrona, everything has a price—and the price of truth is the deadliest of all.

Critic reviews

"The first volume of this sure-to-be-stellar series is a ribald, swashbuckling tale of treacheries, lies, and characters as gritty and cutthroat as anyone you’d meet in a tavern at midnight. Don’t miss these first steps into an epic world—one I can’t wait to tread again."—James Rollins, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Starless Crown and The Cradle of Ice

"There’s never a dull moment in this instantly absorbing debut that offers effortless escapism. Perfect for fans of the 'Mistborn' series by Brandon Sanderson."—Library Journal (starred review)

"Enough grit to make you flinch, enough heart to make you punch the air, this book will have dark fantasy lovers burning through the pages. Everything that's good about modern fantasy is here."—Ed McDonald, author of Daughter of Redwinter

Fantastic Fantasy Mystery Adventure

This book is awesome. Excellent world building, compelling characters, mystery, adventure, humor, and action. This is exactly what I look for in a fantasy novel. Probably one of the best debuts I have ever read. I can’t wait for the sequel.

Eagerly awaiting the next installment

One of the best fantasy books I’ve come across in a while. It’s not only entertaining, but well-written and performed excellently. I highly recommend picking it up.

Refreshing!!!

This is one of very very few books that I have listened to exclusively straight through without needing a change of “scenery” and switching to something else for a while. It was a great listen both for the excellent narration of newbie Brenock O’Connor (who seems to have a great future with his side hustle of narration) and the fun way Logan intermixes the sub genres of grim dark, magic, humor, mystery, and character growth/adventure/hero’s journey. It was constantly surprising and every time I thought I could guess what might happen next (and get bored) it would go in a new direction. The main characters are endearing and, even better, there are several side characters who were wonderfully unique enough to hope for potential 1.5 novellas or 0.5 prequels about. There was just never any dragging of plot and is why I use refreshing as a descriptive. So many authors make the choice to stay in comfortable story arcs for a tad too long. It can lead to whole chapters where nothing is going on other than the underscoring of character traits over and over leaving the intelligent reader with the sense that they are stuck in a remedial detention class. This story never goes there; it is unpredictable and entertaining. Next please!!!

Didn’t expect to like this, but I really did.

This is a very fun read. The protagonist is imminently likable and the story is fast paced enough to keep the reader engaged. I’d compare it to Locke Lamora meets Riyera with a few Brandon Sanderson characters thrown in. Lots of political intrigue and thieves guilds, with an overhanging menace to the world vibe. Will definitely continue the series.

A fun, if stumbling, jaunt

Lucan was fine, but the ensemble around him really made this book worth reading. Particularly Flea.

I needed this

This had been on my reading list for a bit and this lived up to my expectations. I haven’t read any fantastical thievery books yet so this was a good starting point I would suspect. Well paced. Liked how each chapter had me wanting more by the end of it. Definitely couldn’t put it down. Loved the side characters. Plot was nice, can’t wait to see where we go from here. Love a good magic system mystery. 4/5 stars for me
