Acerca de esta escucha

5,000 years of history—from the Bhagavad Gita to Bollywood—fill this masterful portrait of the world's most populous nation and a rising global power.

India—a cradle of civilization with five millennia of history, a country of immense consequence and contradiction—often defies ready understanding. What holds its people together—across its many cultures, races, languages, and creeds—and how has India evolved into the liberal democracy it is today?

From the Harappan era to Muslim invasions, the Great Mughals, British rule, independence, and present-day hopes, John Zubrzycki distills India's colossal history into a gripping true story filled with legendary lives: Alexander the Great, Akbar, Robert Clive, Tipu Sultan, Lakshmi Bai, Lord Curzon, Jinnah, and Gandhi. India's gifts to the world include Buddhism, yoga, the concept of zero, the largest global diaspora—and its influence is only growing. Already the world's largest democracy, in 2023, India became the most populous nation.

Can India overcome its political, social, and religious tensions to be the next global superpower? As the world watches—and wonders—this Shortest History is an essential, clarifying must-listen.

Appreciated his balanced evaluation of positives and negatives of historical giants like Mahatma Ghandhi. Appreciated coverage of current events, COVID 19, BJP and into 2024.

Brief and comprehensive

I liked the rather Quick paced coverage of a very great deal of India’s History, including through much of 2023. While I may not have been exposed to all the history, I think the book gave me a good overview of Indian history which helps me better understand a lot of what I observed on a recent 3-week trip to India. And, if I choose to do so, with this overview in mind, I can now study India’s history in more detail via other books and international news sources.

This book is an excellent resource for someone who wants to get a broad overview of the major threads of Indian History. It could be a good gateway into the study, and it is well written and narrated.

Excellent Short Intro

The narrator had a lovely speaking voice. However. he tended to drop his tone and volume for every subordinate clause making it virtually impossible to hear the nuanced context provided by those salient details. I have listened to many audiobooks. This is one of the few reviews I have ever submitted. While the content of the book is sound, I found myself very frustrated throughout.

Better narration needed

Nothing new. A white foreign journalist just parroting his political views and what we Indians should behave as

Total waste of time.
