About this listen

Strangers aren't well received in the Mutton Hollow neighborhood of the Ozarks. But there was something different about this old gentleman. The cut of his clothes revealed he was obviously from the world beyond the ridges. He carried himself with the unconscious air of one long used to power and influence. His face was marked deeply by pride - pride of birth, of intellect, of culture - but there was more, the countenance of one fairly staggering under a burden of disappointment and grief. No one knew his past, or why he came to the hollow. But his quiet presence was soon to be felt by every family in Mutton Hollow.(P)2005 Books in Motion Christian Fiction Classics Fiction

Highly recommend!!

I have loved this book since I was a child. I have read it so many times I can recite the first lines by memory and it never gets old. I have been to the places in the book many times out by Branson, Missouri. The play of the book is wonderful to watch and the reading of it here was well presented.

Excellent Emphasizes the best traits found in huma

A very moving story where some make wrong choices, others make good ones and in the end good wins in spite of evil

Life changing...so captivating.. couldn’t stop

This story is so Captivating and the characters are empowering to us living in a hurried world today! Everyone is interconnected... and the plot surpassed my expectations!! Enjoy and then see the “outdoor drama” on the site where the story was actually written and “Old Matt’s” log cabin still stands today in Branson Missouri! Wow can’t wait!!

They don't write books like this anymore.

A simple story about the value of simplicity. I found it to be old-fashioned in the best possible way.

Godliness and morals , so sweet and real.

Not often does one come across a book so well written with the bold thread of goodness and Godliness and real life with all the imperfections weaved in. Such a great and timeless book with bold characters both lovable and not . A must read .

a timeless masterpiece

When I was growing up, sometime in the late 50's or early 60's, my father told me the best book he'd ever read was "When a Mans a Man" by Harold Bell Wright. I read it, enjoyed it, don't know that I thought it was the best book I'd ever read but it was a good story. Recently I recommended it to my 21 year old son who read and enjoyed it. As a kid I also read "The Sheperd of the Hills" now some 50 years ago, I also saw the movie starring John Wayne. It was all good. But, reading it again now I was amazed at how much I enjoyed the story, it's a timeless story that anyone can read and think about wanting to lead the same kind of life, away from the city, peaceful, with some meaning. Food for thought for sure. This book is now 104 years old........
