Through the shepherd and those around him, Wright assembles here a gentle and utterly masterful commentary on strength and weakness, failure and success, tranquility and turmoil, and punishment and absolution. This tale of life in the Ozarks continues to draw thousands of devotees to outdoor performances in Branson, Missouri, where visitors can also see the cabin where the real Old Matt and Aunt Mollie lived.

Exquisite Tale of Life in Ozarks

I had never heard of this book before . . . and boy, was I missing out. Seldom have I come across a story so well written, the depth of which I will be pondering for a long time. Like looking at a painting, from several different angles, and seeing something different each time, this tale explores the physical beauty of the Ozark mountains, as well as the hard scrabble lives of those who have lived there over the decades. I loved the language in the book, which evidenced the people's lack of education (book learning) yet clearly displayed their common sense. The open hearts as they received their visitor and allowed him access into their homes and lives was a badge of their character. Humility and grace are interwoven into this tale, so skillfully, that one may not even notice it at first. Yet it is not without pain or real life consequences. This is a book that I will certainly revisit, time and again. Don't miss it.

I live by the landmarks in the book, the story is fictional but the characters are real. It is an excellent depection of Ozarks at that time with a special ending.

Read/listened to this story many times and will again soon! Makes me feel like I was actually present watching it all unfold.
