Publisher's summary

A woman trying to outrun her past is drawn to a coastal village in Maine - and to a string of unsolved murders - in this novel of romance and psychological suspense from New York Times bestselling author Tess Gerritsen.

“Suspenseful, sexy, and soulful.” --J. R. Ward, bestselling author of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series

After an unspeakable tragedy in Boston, Ava Collette flees to a remote village in Maine, where she rents an old house named Brodie’s Watch.

In that isolated seaside mansion, Ava finally feels at peace...until she glimpses the long-dead sea captain who still resides there.

Rumor has it that Captain Jeremiah Brodie has haunted the house for more than a century. One night, Ava confronts an apparition, who feels all too real, and who welcomes her into his world - and into his arms. Even as Ava questions her own sanity, she eagerly looks forward to the captain’s ghostly visits. But she soon learns that the house she loves comes with a terrible secret, a secret that those in the village don’t want to reveal: Every woman who has ever lived in Brodie’s Watch has also died there. Is the ghost of Captain Brodie responsible, or is a flesh-and-blood killer at work? A killer who is even now circling closer to Ava?

Not impressed

This book is definitely different from other Tess Gerritsen's books. I am just not sure if I disliked the story or the narrator. I feel that Jane Rizzoi was taking over the main character. Also, the beginning does not match the ending. Very awkward book.

Different but Tess never lets me down

I had difficulty getting into this book because it began as much more of a romamce than a mystery. Never the less Tess Gerritsen is a favorite of mine so I toughed it out and finished it. I am very glad that I did!

Loved this book

I loved this book. I felt like the narrator put me in Brody's Watch. I think I will listen to it again.

Creepy

Maybe it’s just me but I found this to be creepy. Lasted about 3 hours and I’m done with it. Moving on

Just meh

I bought this the day it came out, having read one other gerritsen (the bone garden, which was fabulous), and I heard this was a spin off of the Ghost and Mrs Muir. Plus I live in Maine and love a bit of local. I was pretty disappointed, being brutally honest. It’s kind of BDSM/fifty shades meets ghost and Mrs Muir meets Murder, She Wrote. Written by a teenager. The main character is really pretty unlikable, and she certainly doesn’t improve or progress by the (sadly obvious) surprise ending. The narrator does a passable job at a Maine accent (no small feat; I was born here and I can’t do a Maine accent), but otherwise she’s a little nasal and grating. Overall, I’m disappointed to say I didn’t feel it was worth the credit. Wish I’d just bought the audible version of the Ghost and Mrs Muir.

Very different

Not the normal Tess Gerritson book for sure. I enjoyed it. Once I realized what was happening I was intrigued. Interesting departure for Rizzoli.

Great story

I listened to this book in its entirety. The story can be repetitive at times but keeps moving forward so you keep listening. I love a good ghost story.

Strange Ghost Story...kind of the same ol' thing

I like Tess Gerritsen's books, and had this one marked in my "Wish List" for quite some time. It came out on the 1st of October, so there weren't any comments or ratings. I almost gave up a few times as she reiterated so often...it was a repeat of the same genre, characters, settings, reteric as many ghost stories. There were times when I got spooked, but few and far between. Hillary Huber received 5 stars, as she is a fantastic narrator!

New England narrators

I wish they would hire narrators from New England, if not Maine. The place names confuse people from Away.
Other than the misfortune of not being a Mainer and insufficient research, the narrator did a good job.
The story is some classic gothic stuff plus very horny ghosts, because that's how we do. Read it, enjoy.
