About this listen

San Francisco, 1915. As America teeters on the brink of world war, Charmian and her husband, famed novelist Jack London, wrestle with genius and desire, politics and marital competitiveness. Charmian longs to be viewed as an equal partner who put her own career on hold to support her husband, but Jack doesn't see it that way...until Charmian is pulled from the audience during a magic show by escape artist Harry Houdini, a man enmeshed in his own complicated marriage. Suddenly, charmed by the attention Houdini pays her and entranced by his sexual magnetism, Charmian's eyes open to a world of possibilities that could be her escape.

As Charmian grapples with her urge to explore the forbidden, Jack's increasingly reckless behavior threatens her dedication. Now torn between two of history's most mysterious and charismatic figures, she must find the courage to forge her own path, even as she fears the loss of everything she holds dear.

Who Knew...?

This book found me. I love historical fiction and I love this time period. I’m fascinated by the wealthy and “famous” of this time period who seemed to live in the lap of luxury, experiencing amazing things, yet come across as selfish, indulgent, and haughty. Who knew about Jack London? I knew very little of Him, and never heard of his second wife, Charmian, before. I have a weird, albeit small, fascination with Houdini, so this book was the perfect merging of subject matter. The narrator, Elisabeth Rodgers, delivered the perfect rendition. She morphs her voice into men and women, and has a lovely distinction in her own reading voice that lended itself to this particular book. For a first time writer, Rosenberg gives us an interesting storyline, and managed to interest me enough to go on google searches and learn more about Jack London and his wife Charmian, and of course, my guy, Harry Houdini, and his wife, Bessie!

Loved it

I didn't know much about Jack London's life and found this to be an interesting story. The narrator did an excellent job.

Disappointing

I had high expectations because of the two protagonists. Very colorful historical figures. Instead this was written as some romance novel with lots of soft porn (geared toward women). Had to stop half way because it got so dull and predictable.

How tedious it was

The narrator could not do men’s voices, and the men in the book were very important. It just was boring and never got better.
