Acerca de esta escucha

"A mischievous ghost, unexpected kisses, and one very grumpy Mr. Darcy—this Night Before Christmas, romance is anything but silent!"

Darcy:

I came to the countryside for peace. Instead, I’ve found myself stuck in a village where everyone knows my business, everyone wants to talk to me, and every single event seems to be held in a room that is far too small for the number of people crammed into it. Worse still, I can’t seem to escape Elizabeth Bennet—a woman who somehow manages to unsettle me with just a look. And now, on top of everything, I’ve apparently acquired a sarcastic Scottish ghost who’s determined to meddle in my affairs. Merry Christmas to me.

Elizabeth:

It was supposed to be a quiet holiday, filled with festive gatherings, a little gossip, and the usual Meryton chaos. But things took an unexpected turn when Mr. Darcy, the most insufferably arrogant man I've ever met, started showing up wherever I turned. The man is always glowering, always judging... or so I thought. Now he’s acting even stranger than usual—and I’m beginning to wonder if I’m the one who’s lost my senses. A few kisses under the mistletoe might help clear things up, but only if he stops glaring at me long enough to notice.

The book is fun but the audiobook made it even better! I have enjoyed Alix James’ stories for quite some time and this one is just as good and worth the read / listen (4 stars for the book but 5 with the audio). Darcy is knocked off his high horse by a Scottish ghost who enjoys playing havoc all around him. It takes Darcy a bit to come to grips with his new “normal” that he might be stuck with him unless he and Elizabeth can find a way to release him. This will be one I will read / listen to again!

The audiobook makes it even better

Even though I had already read this tale before I found the story just as compelling when I listened to it again. The author never disappoints. This had an excellent narrator too.

It’s not a spoiler to say that Darcy has a ghost. The proud, in control Mr Darcy has the spirit of a dead Highland Scott ‘haunting’ him. Although it’s more high jinx than haunt, it’s still highly disturbing to Darcy. The ghost seems to have been called to Darcy by means of an unexpected legacy from some distant connection to his grandmother. The high jinx causes a great amount of damage to Mr Darcy’s image in the community of Meryton who love their chance to gossip about a new visitor in their midst. Darcy is desperate to get rid of the ghost and the ghost is not very forthcoming about why he is only visible to Darcy. Even though he has suffered some of his most embarrassing moments in view of Elizabeth Bennet, she has her inquisitive mind working on trying to figure out what’s going on.

What I liked most about this story: Once Darcy shares his problem with Elizabeth and she believes him she is committed to helping him figure out how to get rid of the ghost. She borrows books from her father’s library which they pour over, yet with no real success. Working together during that time they are slowly getting to know each other. I enjoyed this slow process to their HEA.

In the meantime the P&P story we all know is going on, evil Wickham, cloying Caroline, happy Charles, pushing Mama Bennet, serene Jane, greasy Collins. I really liked this Mr Bennet.

When the revelation of why the ghost is haunting Mr Darcy the story is coming to a dramatic conclusion and of course there must be a happy ending.

I left out all the important details of the why and how. The fun part. You have to listen to it to find out. And I highly recommend you do.

Original and fun.

The plot is fresh and fun with twists and turns. Benjamin Fife is a terrific reader and this was a top notch performance.

Delightful and different story

The story was quite original, and I have enjoyed this author's other works. This one however was not great. The female voices all sounded the same and did not sound feminine. The plot also dragged and was not Christmasy.

performance was just not good
