Story
When The Rules was published in 1995, its message was straightforward: be mysterious. But for women looking for love today, it's not quite so simple. In a world of instant messaging, location check-ins, and status updates, where hook-ups have become the norm and formal one-on-one dates seem a thing of the past, it's difficult to retain the air of mystery that keeps men interested. Now, with help from their daughters, the original Rules Girls, Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider, share their thoroughly modern, fresh take on dating that will help women in today's information age create the happy love lives they want and deserve.

Story
Steve Harvey can't count the number of impressive women he's met over the years - the many incredible women who can run a business, have three kids, maintain a household in tiptop shape, and chair a church group all at the same time. So when it comes to relationships, why can't these same women figure out what makes men commit? According to Steve, it's because they're asking other women for advice when they should be going directly to the source.

Story
A guy who rejects or breaks up with you should no longer exist in your life. Contacting him or allowing him to stay in touch with you will make you work harder and harder to convince him that you’re worth his love and attention, and it will compel you to play that ugly and unwinnable game called Chase-a-Man. The best way to avoid this ugly game and break his spell over you is to cut the guy off (cease all communications and interactions) for a set period of time, or in some cases, keep him cut off out of your life indefinitely.

Publisher's summary
In their New York Times best-seller, The Rules, Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider shared their time-tested techniques for finding the “one.” Controversial yet effective, The Rules has changed millions of women’s lives all over the world since 1995. From Oprah to the Today Show, they helped women attract love through confidence and self-esteem.
Over the past 30 years, the world has changed dramatically. Today, anything goes with fast-paced dating and social media. While technology has accelerated the change (Instagram, texting, Tiktok), biology has remained the same. It is time for a much needed reminder.
The Rules Handbook was written out of necessity. Ellen and Sherrie were hearing from many of their readers who had successfully applied the original Rules’s formula but experienced frustration when dealing others. They wanted a similar strategy to create loving and lasting relationships outside of romance as well. This led to coaching workshops to help others establish their own self-esteem, boundaries, and life philosophies.
The Rules Handbook will do the same for you while helping attract the right people into your life and preventing or minimizing any unnecessary hurt or disrespect. This new book is organized to help you focus on your own life first, remain happy and busy, and nurture your higher self, as opposed to your lower self. You can then set healthy boundaries with confidence and not lose your power to distance yourself from opinions or comments others make in person or on social media.
The Rules Handbook will empower you to gracefully step away from difficult people and instead invest all that time and energy on yourself and the ones who truly love and respect you.

In a world of instant messaging, location check-ins, and status updates, where hook-ups have become the norm and formal one-on-one dates seem a thing of the past, it's difficult to retain the air of mystery that keeps men interested.

So many women get in trouble in their love lives, and 99.9 percent of that trouble could have been avoided if they'd said "Well, f**k him!" a bit more often. Too many women are way too nice and compliant to their men, especially when these men don't deserve that kind of treatment. A woman’s texting habits can reveal a lot about her self-worth, confidence, intelligence, and even her level of class and emotional maturity. Because guys covertly appraise a woman’s relationship potential this way, many women often have no idea that the way they communicate via text is actually sending the wrong message and thus, they unknowingly end up chasing men away.

Changed my life
I enjoyed listening to this book. I wished I would have gotten the dating advice in this book when I was younger but I'm glad I received it now.

Great advice for all relationships
Although the authors are famous for their dating advice the book can help many others as well.
I especially enjoyed the emphasis on being a team player, putting others first , not taking someone for granted, showing gratitude , and loving and respecting yourself.

Good resource
The rules books attracted a lot of avoidants and players but it was still a good bridge between the traumatized boy obsessed early 20s chick I was with the secure healthy mature adult woman I am now. Rules authors say to have your own life and don’t try too hard to “lock him down” especially early in relationship. But I find a secure, healthy man does not like rigid games and it eventually felt inauthentic to my spirit to be doing “rules”. Although, the authors would argue having your own authentic, vibrant happy life and not trying too hard IS the rules lol.

Wrong About Marriage
This book had me until Chapter 8. Completely missed the mark about marriage, assumes husbands only come in one size (working, watching sports, taking out the trash) and turns the wife into a servant. I’m not sure either of the authors have ever been married? Marriage is a partnership, and partners need to communicate and plan together.
