About this listen

No one stirred in the area - people stayed in their little hovels. Hiding, most likely. From the cold, the helplessness. Maybe from the Party. Staying out of sight, like cockroaches.

I am not a cockroach.

"Apathy is the illness of the overprivileged." Words laced with fear - and maybe a hint of prophecy. His father's words. Words Braxton would prefer to ignore.

Braxton Luther is 16 when the Progressive Reform Party takes over the government. It can't be that bad. So they don't want religion in government - that's constitutional. He can't understand his church's hypersensitive reaction or his father's cryptic warning to stand against the Party's ultimatums.

But after living under the new government for a year, Braxton faces a choice - conform to the demands of the ungodded in order to protect his best friend, Eliza, or defy the system and go into hiding, ensuring a life of misery. Still certain that life will settle back into normalcy in the near future, Braxton chooses compliance.

Then the killings begin, and the threat to Eliza becomes darker than Braxton had ever imagined. Reality finally sinks in.

Apathy is no longer a choice.

PG-13 material. Though this book is Christian fiction, there are dark (but not graphic) scenes that some listeners my find disturbing.

Compelling story!

The plot is amazing! The author has done a thorough job at relaying a realistic story of fear and love and the tension that any of us might feel if such vey plausible events were indeed to happen to us. I can't wait to read the next installment of this compelling saga.

My only hesitation in giving full marks are the excessive amounts of flowery analogies.

The voice actor did a great job as well. I grew think and feel with the main characters because of his great performance. My only objection to his performance was that the voice he used for the father of the main character reminded me of a drug addict, so when that character was being voiced I had a hard time getting past it.

All in all, a must read/listen!!

Jenny's review

Where does The Uncloaked rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Ranks up there near the top 10!

Have you listened to any of Kevin Lusignolo’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've never listened to any of Kevin Lusignolo's work before but I thought he did a fine job!

Any additional comments?

A very interesting read that challenges your faith and makes you think about what's going on in the world.

Braxton Luther is your typical, all about me, teenager who doesn't take anything seriously until his self-centered world comes crashing down around him. The Progressive party wins the election, to Braxton that's no big deal but to Eliza Knight it's a huge deal and he needs to wake up fast. Braxton doesn't like anyone forcing him to choose and at the same time he can't figure out what the big deal is why not to just check the box and join the side everyone is on so they can live easier. His family isn't folding against the government control and neither is the Knight's . A group called the Jackals is bullying everyone into joining or lose everything including their lives. Some major blows hit Braxton hard before he wakes and by then things are out of control! Can Braxton choose what's right for such a time as this?

This is the first book in the series.

Not my usual genre, but I enjoyed it.

First, the narrator was great. His different voices for the characters were consistent and he was enjoyable to listen to.
For the storyline, this dystopian destroy-all-religion type of books aren’t usually a typical read for me, but I did enjoy this book, enough so that I will finish the series. It was fast paced and well written and I liked the main character’s snarky sarcasm. That helped lighten a somewhat heavy read.
