Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Story
Ghost stories date back centuries, but those written in the Victorian era have a unique atmosphere and dark beauty. Michael Sims, whose previous Victorian collections Dracula’s Guest (vampires) and The Dead Witness (detectives) have been widely praised, has gathered twelve of the best stories about humanity’s oldest supernatural obsession. The Phantom Coach includes tales by a surprising and often legendary cast, including Charles Dickens, Margaret Oliphant, Henry James, Rudyard Kipling, and Arthur Conan Doyle, as well as lost gems by forgotten masters such as Mary E. Wilkins Freeman and W. F. Harvey. Amelia B. Edwards’s chilling story gives the collection its title, while Ambrose Bierce ("The Moonlit Road"), Elizabeth Gaskell ("The Old Nurse’s Story"), and W. W. Jacobs ("The Monkey’s Paw") will turn you white as a sheet. With a skillful introduction to the genre and notes on each story by Sims, The Phantom Coach is a spectacular collection of ghostly Victorian thrills.

Now, Bram Stoker's Dracula - the pinnacle of Gothic horror for generations - rises again. When young English lawyer Jonathan Harker arrives in Transylvania on the eve of Saint George's Day, he cannot shake a strange feeling of uneasiness. Jonathan has been summoned by the count for business, and while he finds his new host obliging and polite, he can't help but notice the man's pallid skin, odd lack of appetite, and long daytime absences.

Edgar Allan Poe, the master of terror, wrote some of literature's most entertaining and influential short stories, works that invented or anticipated modern detective novels, science fiction, and the horror genre. Tales of Terror collects nine of Poe's best-loved stories, all performed in chilling, highly dramatic readings by Jack Foreman. A masterful blend of Gothic drama and romance, Wilkie Collins' mystery novel is an exploration of illegitimacy and inheritance. Set in Cornwall, the plot foreshadows The Woman in White with its themes of doubtful identity and deception and involves a broad array of characters. The "secret" of the book's title is the true parentage of the book's heroine, Rosamond Treverton, which has been written down and kept in an unused room at Porthgenna Tower. This is where, 20 years later, much of the novel's action is set.

Story
Wharton's most erotic and lyrical novel, Summer explores a daring theme for 1917, a woman's awakening to her sexuality. Eighteen-year-old Charity Royall lives in the small town of North Dormer, ignorant of desire until the arrival of architect Lucius Harney. Like the succulent summer landscape in the Berkshires around them, Charity's romance is lush and picturesque, but its consequences are harsh and real.

Hailed as Charlotte Brontë’s “finest novel” by Virginia Woolf, Villette is the timeless semi-autobiographical tale of Lucy Snowe. Left with no family and no money, Lucy goes against her own timid nature and travels to the small city of Villette, France, where she becomes a school teacher in Madame Beck’s school for girls. The year is 1920. Dr. John Petrie, a physician and our narrator, meets his friend Denis Nayland Smith, who served as British police commissioner in Asia. Smith seems to know all things Asia and has the innate ability to get all the support he needs from British government officials. Smith stands for everything good, proper, and most importantly, British. Petrie is, of course, knowledgeable in medicine, forensics, and chemistry and an ace with a pistol - for good measure. Together they must thwart Dr. Fu-Manchu’s diabolical plan to restore China to its former glory.

A Good Novel
Any additional comments?
Well written story that keeps you listening. The narrator carried the story and characters through nicely and was a pleasure to listen to. I don’t usually listen to books in this category, but will be looking for more from this author in the future.

atmospheric, creepy, mysterious.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved the overall gothic feel to the mystery.
What about Daniela Acitelli’s performance did you like?
I loved Daniela Acitelli's performance of The Red Lady. I liked her accent, expression and tone of voice which I thought complemented the historical nature of the novel. She does a good job of voicing the characters and I would certainly listen to more books narrated by her.

Yes, this book is best listened to is one or two sittings in order to feel the overall creepiness of the setting and to enjoy the mystery unfold.

Classic gothic tale gets needed audio update!
Any additional comments?
The Red Lady is a classic short story that was written almost 100 years ago by Katharine Newline Burt. This book is written in a gothic first-person style with mysterious apparitions, strange events, and even a suspicious death. And its language and dialog is very similar to what a reader might find today in another book in this genre.
The story revolves around Janice Gale who is a new housekeeper at a country estate in the Southern United States (I pictured South Carolina while I was listening). After most of the house staff quit after repeatedly seeing ghosts, Janice becomes suspicious of the “ghost” and begins an investigation into the strange happenings around the manor house. It turns out this “ghost” is searching for lost Russian jewels. To complicate matters, Janice falls for one of the houseguests, who believes she has a split personality disorder because the ghost looks just like her!
I listened to the Audible version of this audiobook narrated by Daniela Acitelli who did an admirable job. I received a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest unbiased review.

The Red Lady
Considering that this book was written in the 1920's,I will cut it some slack on the stereotypical black slaves.I can't do the same for Daniela Acitellis performnace of the stereotypical slaves and the Russian man. They were horrendous. The story was a semi good one,but drawn out a bit too long.I was given this book free by the author, narrator or publisher.

Well wrought suspense,Would make a great stage pla
Told in first person.
Aspects of the plot would not fly today (housekeeper, treatment of laborers), but the basics of plotline and characterization are timeless. Listener is kept in suspense over the reasoning for happenings, as well as determining who are good guys vs bad guys. Denouement is startling and most unexpected!
Ms. Acitelli brings it all to life! She is able to differentiate characters well, and portray their emotions clearly.

Mystery with potential
Would you try another book from Katharine Newlin Burt and/or Daniela Acitelli?
I'm not in a hurry to read another Newlin Burt novel. The characters ran either hot or cold in a matter of page of narration. Ms. Acitelli did a fair job of narrating this piece. Overall, something wasn't quite right. Perhaps the style of narration did not fit the classic masterpiece mystery style this called for? Ms. Acitelli did keep me listening 'til the very end. Kudos to Ms. Acitelli.
The overall accents for the various characters took away from the narration. I could not tell if the servants were southern negro or lower class English. I believe they were supposed to be uneducated, southern negro.
What three words best describe Daniela Acitelli’s voice?
Nice, articulate, storyteller

Eerie Tale in Classic Style.
If you could sum up The Red Lady in three words, what would they be?
Ghostly Psychological Thriller.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Red Lady?
When Janice thinks she was locked in her room only to find that Mr. Dabney is able to open it easily. Mr. Dabney proceeds to take her into the child's room and announces that a woman resembling her had scared the child to death. The dead little boy is holding a handful of her hair, and Janice is left wondering if she is mad.
Which scene was your favorite?
When Janice rescues a bewildered Mr. Dabney who thinks she is trying to kill him. She figures out what the thieves are doing and thwarts their plan to kill him.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
At a little over four hours, it was a bit long for one sitting. It took me three sittings. The narrator does an excellent job. Her voice is well matched to this story. She is easy to listen to.
Any additional comments?
This is an old book, so there are a few racist and sexist references in it. It is not pervasive, only a few sentences in the first chapters. This book is very clean other than that. It is a well written mystery/psychological thriller. I enjoyed it. I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.

Mystery puzzle
I just find the story to be to "chance filled".
The story kept me listening - but will not be one I listen to again soon.
Narrator did a great job!
Maybe I read too much and can see around corners; that might be my disappointment.
It's worth a try!
