About this listen

Groundbreaking study that established the reputation of the famed theologian traces the search for the historical person of Jesus. Schweitzer examines works of more than 50 18th- and 19th-century authors and scholars and concludes that many of the earlier historical reconstructions of Christ were largely fantasies. The criterion for all subsequent studies.

This book is a survey of the various attempts, mainly during the 19th century and early 20th century in Germany, to build a history of the life of Jesus. The author only rarely inserts his own opinion, except for chapter 20, where he gives his conclusion. Some of it I found tedious to listen to, because many of the books surveyed do not have a high regard for Scripture.

Regarding the recording, the narrator pronounced German names and words horribly. For listeners that know German, it might be excruciating to listen to.

I'm very glad I listened to it and plan to continue studying. This book provides fuel for deeper study and understanding of who Jesus is and ultimately knowing Him, which should be the purpose of any follower of Jesus.

This is a book for Christians by Christians. It takes to the final chapter, after speaking in circles for hours and hours, to get to the point.

The historical Jesus doesn’t matter. Only the theological Christ matters.
