About this listen
Step into the magical world of the Institute, where witches learn how to ride dragons, plants have magic, and thunderstorms are more than just a weather phenomenon. Follow the journey of four students, Penelope, Wickham, Herja, and Kaia, as they navigate the challenges of their third year.
A Clean YA Epic Fantasy
The group of students at the Institute is back for another semester, but things are a bit different this time. Penelope is struggling because she doesn't have a mate, while Herja is pursuing a diagnosis for her neurodivergence. Kaia learns that Finnegan has escaped from prison, and there are rumors of a second magical spring while the group is camped at the base of Thunder Ridge, learning to take their dragon forms and ride their dragons. When Herja receives a letter from an old friend, the group sets out to help, but they face danger and a mysterious magic that turns woodland creatures into stone. As they wait out a massive thunderstorm in a cave, Penelope opens up about her insecurities, and the group comes together to help each other through their struggles.
This story is a must-listen for anyone who loves adventure, magic, and a touch of suspense. You will be drawn into the world of the Institute, where dragons and witches learn to fly and ride together and where friendships and self-discovery are just as important as learning magic. Take advantage of the thrilling journey of Penelope, Wickham, Herja, Kaia, and Nolen in this spellbinding tale.

Misfist fit in!
I devoured this book. It was so exciting, there were always dangers lurking and the friends were attentive to make sure everyone was OK. And then there was the uncertainty about one's own place in society. I'm always amazed at how many prejudices influence us. The author portrayed this brilliantly.
The narrator did a great job of presenting this book in a sensitive and emotional way.

Great storyline!
This series is just getting better and better! The narrator does a really good job at giving each character their own voice and dialect. I love that there are dragons and witches who are fated mates paired up to protect the kingdom together. Though I’m still curious where things are going with Penelope after this book.
When their previous nemesis shows up in this book again it was an “of course he’s back” moment for me, I’m still waiting to see if he changes his ways because sometimes I get the feeling that he’s not actually a typical “villain” as one might expect…hmm.

Good
A really good story. Great plot line. It feel this is written well & meeting with typical teenage behavior. Definitely has their caring & impulsive nature.
There is just one thing I seem to be missing. & that is the connection between the title of the book & what happens is the story. I read listened to the book twice just to make sure I didn’t miss anything. As I said the story is great but there is no quest- it’s more is a rescue mission, & there was no mention of a phantom feather… just a rumored magical spring that is not the silver springs that they all visit in the beginning.
All this aside, I do love this series. It gives me a nostalgic remembrance of when I read the Harry Potter series. The villain of the series is getting tiresome BUT the author does amazing using the kids to help delve into his background so it breathes new life into this character. Another applaud for Marie as she brings to light the difficulties of being neurodivergent!
I recommend to those who love Harry Potter vibes, great magical system & utopia kind of feel.

New Challenges
I enjoyed book three of the "Defenders of the Realm" has much as the first two. The students were back at the Institute for another semester, and each had to face their own unique challenges along with accomplishing the tasks presented in their studies. The worldbuilding became increasingly complex. The character arcs were believable and added to my appreciation for the difficulties the students were trying to overcome. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. Zane Boyer's narration was effective, and his performance was a pleasure to hear. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review which reflected my opinions.
