About this listen

Here is the private and most intimate correspondence of one of America's most influential and incisive journalists - Hunter S.Thompson. In letters to a who's who of luminaries, from Norman Mailer toCharles Kuralt, Tom Wolfe to Lyndon Johnson, William Styron to Joan Baez - not to mention his mother, the NRA, and a chain of newspaper editors - Thompson vividly catches the tenor of the times in 1960s America and channels it all through hisown razor-sharp perspective.

Passionate in their admiration, merciless in their scorn, and never anything less than fascinating, the dispatches of The Proud Highway offer an unprecedentedand penetrating gaze into the evolution of the most outrageous raconteur/provocateur ever to assault a typewriter.

The Only H.S.T. Narrator Worth His Salt

Hillgartner does justice to the material. I can’t bear to listen to Sowers for more than a few minutes.

A must read/listen.

A fantastic book that shows the evolution not only the writer but America. My favorite aspect of this book is the voice narration. It is a perfect reading that keeps you engaged. I have found it difficult to listen to other HST books narration because they tend to have just too much flourish in a cartoonish type of way. Malcolm Hillgartner has this wonderful almost newsman voice, that reminds me of the old network announcers. other readings for different books get to horsey and inflict too much on particular sentences, or situations. for instance, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas has a real "Hey man/Far Out" sound to it, that gets very distracting.

Very well read by narrator

As a fellow photojournalist, I really enjoyed the insights and experiences of Hunter S Thompson. It also put into perspective his immaturity and unprofessionalism, which somehow has gained him fame. Enjoyable and insightful for a clear view of who Hunter really is.

Excellent listen

Great editing of Thompson’s letters, excellent reading by the narrator, and the lively prose of HST. We’ll worth the time.

Not for a casual listen

Excellent overall look into the mind and early days of Hunter. It’s an excellent personal look into how he reacted to various events in both his life and otherwise.

Rant overload

I’m guessing in the 60’s, this was popular, but I listen to books to get away from complaining.

"Gonzo" like sausage is best when you don't watch

I was disappointed.
My hero has feet of clay.
Such is the way of hero's.
"gonzo" like sausage is better .
When you don't watch it being made.
