About this listen

“A masterpiece that can compare with Steinbeck’s East of Eden. … Some books make you laugh; some make you cry; some make you think. The Prince of Tides is a rarity: It does all three.” — Detroit Free Press

A modern American classic and a family saga that spans decades, this is the story of the volatile Tom Wingo, his brilliant but troubled twin sister, Savannah, and the complex and damaging family legacy they share. Moving between the sparkling glamour of New York City and the vanishing beauty of the South Carolina low country, The Prince of Tides is Pat Conroy’s masterwork.

“A big, sprawling saga of a novel…the kind you hole up with and spend some days with and put down feeling you have emerged from a terrible, wonderful spell.” San Francisco Chronicle

“A literary gem . . . The Prince of Tides is in the best tradition of novel writing. It is an engrossing story of unforgettable characters.” —The Pittsburgh Press

What an adventure!!

I had seen the movie years ago, so thought I would give it a try. Read the reviews about the narrator and how they did not care for him, I thought he did an excellent job... both the male and female parts. If you let that deter you from this story, then you will lose out. What a complex, ever-moving adventure. So much depth! I feel like there were mini-stories within the main story. Beautiful descriptions without losing any momentum. Thoroughly enjoyed this!

Dr Fieldstone said it’s her favorite book, and I can see why

I feel most complete when reading a good book. Seeing the characters struggle, grow, and change, reminds me that I can do it. I can dredge up the memories, talk about them, and move past them.

A great narration of a favorite story.

It’s about time this wonderful book came to Audible. Mr. Carlson does a fine job narrating this whirlwind of a story.

Beautiful, painful, tragic, and redeeming

Amazingly woven tale of a damaged family. Incredible character development. Eventual healing of sorts. Honest emotions.

A good roller-coaster ride!

Having read this book years ago, I thought it was worth a shot, to listening to it one more time! The best I gleaned from a second go, is mixed at best! I thought that Pat Conroy did very well in the area of not letting you know where the overall story was headed. I found the beginning chewy! I’m reluctant to say more as I hate spoiled plots, and I don’t understand those that give them away! That said there’s more than a few good chuckles, and crazy twist and turns! The characters are all unique…
So, I think if you’re patient, the story will makeup for it’s shortcomings! Good luck 👍 , and I hope this works for you!

Perfect voice for Tom.

Very moving. Not a happy book but substantial and a classic. Highly recommended. A favorite.

Words are so important

So many beautiful strings of words. The story is good at the telling. I’m going to recommend this to my husband as I really thought I was hearing it told through a man. Is it long, yes. But it is still worth the telling of the complexities of a family. Try it and you too will most likely be drawn in.
