Acerca de esta escucha

Brother Lawrence decided that he needed to concentrate on a simple idea: loving God in whatever he did. The Practice of the Presence of God is a record of the conversations and letters exchanged between Brother Lawrence and people in his community, who came to him for advice once they noticed his passionate living for God.

As a Man Thinketh, by James Allen, gives examples to illustrate how "mind is the master weaver, both of the inner garment of character and the outer garment of circumstance," so that people may begin to weave in enlightenment and happiness.

The content is very good, but the reader is not good. I find his voice and pace ineffective, choppy, and distracts people from the content.

Reader didn’t do a good job

The short book about presence of God is better but not very practical; the short book about thoughts is not as good but probably more efficient as self help. If you are Catholic beware, both (specially the second) contain doctrinal errors.

Two short books without much relationship among themselves

A most excellent book that talks a lot about how thought influences everything in our lives. We need to strive for holiness by keeping ourselves present in God. This book was a short, but very good read, and I feel that I gleaned a lot of insight and edification from its pages may God forever bless the one who wrote it.

A call to holiness

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

This is a short book. Good thing.....this book is one that is better read instead of listening to it. The narrator read the book as if he was in a hurry; without giving much thought as to how or what he was reading.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Edward Lewis?

Edward Lewis would have been fine as the narrator if he would have slowed down and give some thought as to what was being read.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No

Better to read as a book

I will be listening to this audio book over and over. Absolutely fantastic, I would highly recommend it to anyone who is on a spiritual journey, who isn't.

Phenomenal Book

Why are these works published together? They couldn't be more different. The first is a work that seeks to reorient your heart to God in the midst of suffering, and to rejoice in it. The second is a work that lays blame for all circumstances on oneself, and says if you are suffering you are thinking "bad thoughts." And while the second is full of biblical allusions, they are so twisted from their context, and with nary a mention of God, that it mystifies the reader. If I could rate them separately, I would give 4 stars for the first and 1 star for the second.

Two opposite works in a single volume

The first book was recommended by many of my leaders and I definitely see why now! Practicing the Presence basically demonstrates how every Christian should personally and practically interact with God instead of just trying to stick to powerless devotions! This expanded my encounters with ABBA and I can never turn back now lol! And As a Man Thinketh strategically and purposefully illustrated how powerful our minds actually are to unlocking EVERYTHING God has stored inside of us! This book(though it took me a minute to realize it was an included bonus and not an additional chapter of the first one lol)was a fantastic read and even shifted a few of my previous perspectives on life along with encouraging me to chase after my dreams & visions!!! 5 STAR RECOMMENDED!!!!!

This is a simple but powerful book that puts the scripture “For My yoke is easy [to bear] and My burden is light.”” Into perspective and then show you how to put it into practice. I’m only at the tip of the iceberg but I can see so many possibilities with Christ much more clearly than before. I love you my abba!

He is always with us.

Initially I thought both books were by Brother Lawrence, so imagine my surprise, confusion, suspicion and indignation when, after one red flag after the other I looked up James Allen. In what lab were these two men's words combined into one audio book? I was so thrilled to find Brother Lawrence's book on Audio I didn't read the description carefully enough.

These books do not belong together

I greatly appreciated Brother Lawrence’s book as it causes any pursuer of Christ to reflect upon life and one’s actions as to the glory of God and receive ALL that happens in life through the lens of God shepherding you. 5 Stars!

James Allen work is interesting as he grapples with the power of words and how they plant seeds in a man—positive and negative. Although he never appeals to God as Bother Lawrence does, instead he appeals to the inner man and a vague cosmic order. I can see from his works how the “Prosperity Gospel” can take this and run. He alludes to scripture but focuses more on self help (man has the power to shape his destiny), contra Lawrence, and mentioned nothing of an intimate personal relationship with God. He’s a philosophical writer and some observations he makes are interesting but fails, in my opinion, on acknowledging God. 3.5 stars.

The narrator was a bit rigid and lifeless in reading as if it was being read by an AI. 2 stars.

Brother Lawrence great! James Allen take with a grain of salt
