Critic reviews

"Azim Jamal and Harvey McKinnon do a remarkable job of addressing the all-important questions: Why give? To whom should I give? What should I give? How can I give? When should I give? With pith and wisdom they make a compelling case for the old adage that the more you give, the more you receive." (Jack Canfield)

ok

i struggled listening to this. would have liked more citations and a more academic book but this is a fast, easy read if you just want a non in depth nook on giving.

Simple, practical advice

I enjoyed the book and the narrator. The information was interesting and well presented without being preachy or demeaning. The stories and examples used were appropriate and inspiring.

Giving to others is powerful

Can you give to others part of your time, part of your money or part of your knowledge to help others? The authors argue that you can and have lots of reasons to do so. It is a good book, with scientific researches and real meaning to life. Give it a try.

No real substance

This is a book of platitudes, anecdotes and quotes mixed with thoughts of what changing your mindset towards giving MIGHT do rather than evidence of what giving DOES do on any level. If you like generic self help books then this is for you. If you want evidence and solid inspiration to change your mindset towards giving, look elsewhere.

Felt Like I Was Being Lectured By My Parents

I have tired twice to listen to this book and have been unable to get past more than a few chapters. In those chapters as well as the summary of what would be covered I heard nothing that I wasn't taught as a child simply by watching my parents actions and choices. This book is really like a long lecture on why you should give and what you might be able to give as well as telling you over and over how much you gain by giving. All of which is accurate but does not give the listener/reader the experience of what is being pointed to. Without more of the feeling of the "Gifts of Giving" the book and it's message lands flat. The only part that I found helpful was expanding the possibilities of what one might have to give. Otherwise it's too bad really as I was hoping for something more grounded and advanced and even research driven than a parental lecture. A book detailing the wonderful experiences of the authors would have been more instructive and entertaining and perhaps uplifting.

Intellectual Mush

Any additional comments?

If you believe that "there is no Truth," or "we all define our own truth," you may enjoy this book. I had hoped this book would cite some firm numbers or statistics. Rather than demonstrating how giving improves our communities, it instead basically says - for 4 hours - "giving improves your life by improving your attitude." It's a feel-good book, but only just so.
