About this listen

From number one best-selling author Joy Ellis, a totally absorbing mystery full of stunning twists and turns.

A mystery which will captivate you till the dramatic ending.

Jackman and Evans’ most dangerous enemy is back to finish things off.

The domestic bliss of Detective Inspector Rowan Jackman, of Fenland Constabulary, doesn’t last long. His old nemesis, serial killer Alistair Ashcroft, is back in town and ready to tidy up unfinished business.

Ashcroft sends a sinister text to DS Marie Evans. His opening move in what will prove to be a lethal game of cat-and-mouse. Yet for all his taunts, where is he? In a county crawling with police on the lookout for him, Ashcroft is nowhere to be found.

Everyone Jackman cares about is in danger. Alongside the hunt for Ashcroft, however, normal police work must continue. The separate thefts of six pigs, a thoroughbred stallion, guns and some oil lead Jackman’s crew to the notorious Lorimer family, ruled over on their farm by the fearsome matriarch Rachel.

Meanwhile, a seemingly routine break-in at the home of gun-club owner Kenneth Harcourt quickly becomes more complicated when the man long held responsible for having killed Harcourt’s young daughter in a hit-and-run is shot dead in a car park - by a sniper. A killer is on the loose in the quiet streets of Saltern-le-Fen, and he isn’t going to stop at claiming one life. But why is he focusing on young Kevin, so close to promotion to detective?

And the sniper, like Ashcroft, takes to taunting the police: they’ll never catch him, they need to respect him, they shouldn’t be sidetracked looking for their old adversary.

In a stunning conclusion, Jackman and Evans race against time to catch the sniper and track down their deadly adversary. A lethal game with a very patient man. Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you listening until the shocking ending. Set in the atmospheric Lincolnshire Fens whose towns and isolated villages hide many dark secrets.

Be Patient and Trust Your Journey

Another wonderful story from Joy Ellis. She manages to weave a crime drama with glimpses of humanity. As with her earlier stories, the crime drama brings focus on the human variable that is most important. Love the interplay between the characters and they are true to form from earlier stories. Jackman and Evans interactions are my favorite. I agreed with a comment the serial killer made about these two(won't spoil it for future listeners). I appreciate the humanity shown by various characters despite their social position or capabilities. I hope there are more stories ahead.

Fantastic

This sixth novel in the Hugh and Marie series is excellent on two levels.

It is satisfying to see the personal lives of the copper team flesh out and move along.

Plus the crime thriller plot is a masterpiece of intricately intervoven plot threads and twists.

Disparate seperate crimes were a head scratcher in the beginning. I was delighted by when they started all coming together.

I was interesting to watch a psycopath in action. Especially from such an upfront and close viewpoint. He was indeed a master manipulator. Facsinating.

Joy Ellis brings her characters to life and makes it easy for the reader to care deeply for all of them.

Last but by no means least is the incredible voice actor and narrator Richard Armitage (hope I spelled his last name right--don't have it in front of me).

His performance is flawless. He flows seamlessly from one character to another and gives convincing voice to women as well as men. Wonderful!

The ten hours flew by as if watching a two-hour movie! Love you guys! Thanks. ❤

Good but more predictable than previous

I really enjoy the Jackman /Evans books, but this one was quite predictable. Still worth the read though.

Outstanding!

The Patient Man is yet another exceptional Jackman story. And Richard Armitage the perfect narrator.

Really Good, But…

I’m thoroughly enjoying this series as well as her other series with Nikki Galena. My single complaint is I feel her apparent stance on gun laws was a bit tiresome by the end. As always the storyline and characters were strong and believable. I just felt that I understood (a) how much she dislikes guns and (b) that she appreciates Britain’s gun laws by the second chapter. By the end of the book I felt like her views had been drilled into my head and even perhaps a bit scolded for living in a country where the laws aren’t the same. I’m not sure it was necessary to repeat that the characters hated guns nearly as often as it was. Otherwise, another solid detective story. I’ve read so many suspense mystery books in recent years that I’m truly loving these really solid storylines that I’ve been missing.

Enjoyable series

A thoroughly enjoyable read with really excellent narration. Good to complete the series and will listen to more books read by narrator.

Truly Good Cops

I love this team of police with their loyalty and courage. I cannot get enough of DCI Jackman and his sidekick Marie. Treat yourself to their excellence. What a diversion from cruelty and stupidity.
