About this listen

Written in Lauren K. Denton’s signature Southern style, The One You’re With tells the story of a seemingly perfect marriage rocked by secrets from the past.

High-school sweethearts Mac and Edie Swan lead a seemingly picture-perfect life in the sleepy-sweet community of Oak Hill, near Mobile, Alabama. Edie is a respected interior designer, Mac is a beloved pediatrician, and they have two great kids and a historic home on tree-lined Linden Avenue. From the outside, the Swan family is the definition of “the good life.” And life is good—mostly. Until a young woman walks into Mac’s office one day. A young woman whose very existence threatens all Mac and Edie have built and all they think they know about each other.

Nineteen years after a summer apart, with a family and established lives and careers, the past that Mac and Edie thought they left behind has come back to greet them. For the first time, constants in their lives are called into question: their roles as parents, their reputation as upstanding members of the community, and the very foundations of their marriage. As they wade through the upheaval in both their family and professional lives, they must each examine choices they made long ago and chart a new course for their future.

Performed well, the reader was enjoyable and not annoying. Decent story. I slow the playing speed a bit so I don’t feel like I’m stressing to hear every word.

Enjoyable

Well written and thoughtful story about the complications of marriage and friendships. The narrator made the story come to life- excellent!

Good story. I was troubled by the offense caused by a very short hook-up that had occurred the summer after high-school graduation AFTER both teens had broken up and gone their separate ways briefly. Give the guy a break, drama queen. Kind of stuff for daytimetalk shows (w/o the foul language).

Good listen

I loved this book. It’s “real talk” about a very real marriage and the (extreme and not so extreme) bump and rides which naturally comes with marriage. I also loved Edie’s professional pursuits and the individual growth of all the characters. Read it!

Riveting!

When I'm reading or listening to a book I can imagine myself being able to feel what the characters are going through. I hope this book was made into a movie! Thank you Lauren K. Denton and thank you to the narrator Caroline Hewitt.

Loved this book!

The wife’s accusation about her husband of lying and being unfaithful about an affair that took place before they were married was not believable. The amount of the book that was taken up with that phony perspective significantly reduced the enjoyment of the story and the book.

Phony

This story portrayed a very unique and interesting situation, but could have been presented better. The male character was one dimensional and did not provoke any empathy. Grew tired of author saying what a “great guy” he was, but having him act in a contradictory manner. Little attention was given to how/what was done to help his children adjust to the family upheaval. They were at very fragile ages and he just blew their world apart and expected them to accept it. Good parenting from wife, but not enough support from husband. Very little thought was given to the wife’s emotional well being and it was unclear if the husband truly loved her or if she was what was expected. I have a hard time when authors don’t show strong female characters. The male character did not put work into repairing his marital relationship. Spent more time dwelling on past relationship than current one. He seemed surprised that his wife wasn’t excited to take over the responsibility for his life choices. Would have been refreshing to show the wife explore the path not taken and add a twist to the plot. I felt like the emotions of this type of situation could have been better portrayed.

Good storyline, execution could have been better
