About this listen
A cautionary tale about the consequences of environmental pollution.
They are part of our daily lives. We watch them from our kitchen windows and backyard decks as they scurry over the branches of our tall oak trees. We laugh at their antics as they furiously bury and unbury their precious acorns. Yes, they are part of our lives and, though, sometimes a nuisance, we generally enjoy and tolerate them.
But what happens when something goes wrong?
What happens if some outside force causes their DNA to explode, creating a whole new species? What happens when that species begins to distrust and fear humans?
Brooke Davis, her daughter, Tessa, and their intrepid dog, Petey, are about to find out.
The Night of the Sciurus, A Western Michigan Tale of Terror is a story of environmental horror by multi-award-winning and USA Today bestselling author, Linda Watkins.

This town...there's an evil here... In a town where the people are colder than the weather, and the situation is crazier and more mysterious than anyone can possibly imagine, Chicago police officer Christian Hawk decides to take on the challenge of unravelling three months’ worth of strange disappearances. Opting to escape and fall into his work after a personal tragedy, officer Hawk ventures into the cold, desolate town of Holberg, Norway to attempt to uncover why multiple people have gone missing, with no obvious traces left behind except strange markings.

Story
It was supposed to be a holiday to fix the cracks in our fractured family. I knew the seven days would be endless, but I never imagined that one of us would only survive for six of them… As I carry my case into the charming and rustic cottage and smile at my sister-in-law, Kelli, I allow myself a moment of hope. Perhaps this holiday will force our family to address our long-held grudges and leave with the promise of a happier future.

Former Air Force Combat Rescue Officer, Rafe Cross, has seen it all, not only while in uniform but as an operative on the elite Maverick Ops security team that has a reputation of doling out hard justice. However, nothing could have prepared him for his current assignment in his hometown of Canyon Ridge, Texas. When bones are unearthed in a shallow grave, Rafe and the town's sheriff, Bree O'Neil, are convinced they've stumbled upon the remains of their long-lost friend, and the discovery not only threatens to tear the town apart, but it also spurs a killer to come after them.

After their mother passes, three estranged siblings reunite to sort out her estate. Beth, the oldest, never left home. She stayed with her mom, caring for her until the very end. Nicole, the middle child, has been kept at arm’s length due to her ongoing battle with a serious drug addiction. Michael, the youngest, lives out of state and hasn’t been back to their small Wisconsin town since their father ran out on them seven years before.

Story
Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television "family."

Johnnie Rico never really intended to join up—and definitely not the infantry. But now that he’s in the thick of it, trying to get through combat training harder than anything he could have imagined, he knows everyone in his unit is one bad move away from buying the farm in the interstellar war the Terran Federation is waging against the Arachnids. Because everyone in the Mobile Infantry fights. And if the training doesn’t kill you, the Bugs are more than ready to finish the job.

Environmental Mutations
The Night of the Sciurus is definitely a cautionary tale of what could possibly happen if man does not clean up environmental hazards. The story starts off a little slow, but once it pucks up speed, the reader or listener will be confronted by an aggressive mutation that no one would ever suspect. The storyline is well written and full of suspense. I enjoyed the book, but it really gave me pause to think about the what ifs. The narrator did a good job giving the story life. I received this book for free upon my request. I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased review here of my own volition.

Rocky the squirrel
Although the premise is somewhat thin, the narration lifts this story with characters that are believable. The characters are well defined and consistent throughout the listen. I would have loved to have one particular squirrel redeem itself.
