Acerca de esta escucha

Edith Hahn was an outspoken young woman in Vienna when the Gestapo forced her into a ghetto and then into a slave labor camp. When she returned home months later, she knew she would become a hunted woman, so she went underground.

She emerged in Munich as "Grete Denner". There she met Werner Vetter, a Nazi Party member who fell in love with her. Despite Edith's protests and even her eventual confession that she was Jewish, he married her and kept her identity secret.

I have certainly read many accounts of the holocaust years. Sometimes I have thought I should be finished reading them, because the story has been told now, and it may not be healthy for me to dwell upon it time after time. But The Officer's Wife" has taught me that the story must be to told again and again. Itis as rich as the multitude of people who experienced it. I learned a great deal from the telling of this participant. I learned the heroic efforts of both victims and members of the dominant population. I learned how greatly small and seemingly meaningless efforts of kindness affect the world ever after. I am grateful for the insights conveyed by reading of this narrator and those who brought us the story.

A Definite Must

Would you consider the audio edition of The Nazi Officer's Wife to be better than the print version?

Only because of the added animated narration, I would definately say the audiobook is better than just the book alone though I haven't read the book by itself.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Edith was my favorite character, of course; the woman who wrote the story. Sic a silly question for a biography, haha. Her perseverance throughout all of the hardships she endured makes her a strong woman.

Which character – as performed by Barbara Rosenblat – was your favorite?

This is impossible to answer because each character had their own part that brought the sort to life.

Who was the most memorable character of The Nazi Officer's Wife and why?

Edith and Pepe were the most memoable. Edith, as she had lived in every page and Pepe because of how much you wanted to smack him around a bit for being such a mama's boy.

Any additional comments?

This is by far the best book and most memorable that I have read this year. While most other a holocaust books take you into concentration camps and leave you feeling mad or sorry, this book has enough humor and moments where you're reminded that not all Germans were as hostile as the nazis in the camps were made out to be. Though Edith's life was far from easy during this time, and she had to fight to survive, it's a nice change readin about someone who had just an ounce of freedom while lving under the radar instead of leading a life in Auchwitz.

A nice change

Would you consider the audio edition of The Nazi Officer's Wife to be better than the print version?

I listened to this book mesmerized by Edith's story and having to tell myself that this wasn't fiction. Her strength of character through unbelievable hardships shines through. life under Nazi Germany came alive in this book. The cruelty of mankind towards people who are different was evident throughout. A must listen to book. Narrator was excellent. Totally believable, inspirational and not over-dramatic. This story will stay with me.

What did you like best about this story?

Great read! Very smart and creative. She was a very strong woman. You do what you have to do in a situation that she was in. I hated to put it down could not wait to pick it up again. Wonderfully spoken by the narrator. A must have.

Wise woman

What does Barbara Rosenblat bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I kept having to remind myself that she wasn't The Nazi Officer's Wife, but only the reader.

Any additional comments?

Not a typical Holocaust story, but another true hero in my eyes.

Hard to believe it wasn't the reader's real story!

I found this book years ago and wanted to read it but never did. I am so glad that I found it again and finally know the story. My memory is terrible but I just happened to recall the name as I searched for a good book this morning. I haven't been able to put this down all day and don't regret a second of it.

This is a beautiful story that must be told.
