Acerca de esta escucha

Booker Prize-winning author Salman Rushdie combines a ferociously witty family saga with a surreally imagined and sometimes blasphemous chronicle of modern India and flavors the mixture with peppery soliloquies on art, ethnicity, religious fanaticism, and the terrifying power of love. Moraes "Moor" Zogoiby, the last surviving scion of a dynasty of Cochinese spice merchants and crime lords, is also a compulsive storyteller and an exile. As he travels a route that takes him from India to Spain, he leaves behind a tale of mad passions and volcanic family hatreds, of titanic matriarchs and their mesmerized offspring, of premature deaths and curses that strike beyond the grave.

Been years since I last heard this on audiocassette tapes. I knew what to expect and yet I sat spellbound waiting for specific segments. It was fresh all over again.

This is an author known for taking risks in recording and putting forth controversial information. I'd follow him anywhere.

Courageous...

As a painter and lover of art and storytelling there is so much in this rich text to enjoy. The performance was also very good. I’m sure I’ll listen to it again sometime as I do most of Rushdie’s works .

Powerful , beautiful and surreal

The narrator's rendition of Indian-English idioms spoken by the main characters is hilarious. Whole novel is a huge satire about "multicultural" India.

Hilarious

While the story and characters were interesting, I found that Malhotra’s performance really pushed it to the next level.
The book itself is very poetic and lyrical.

Sunil Malhotra is worth listening to

Wonderful portrayal of rise of Hindu fundamentalists in modern India. Salman Rushdie traces this from late nineteenth century to today. The family saga is Bollywood in scope: action and emotion: I got fed up in the last 20%

Fundamentalism in modern India

The reader used intense volume and screeching for some of the characters. To the point that I'd have to turn the volume way down to protect my ears. Then it would be to quiet too hear the regular narrative and other characters. It got somewhat better after the grandmother died. But he used (overused) the technique for other characters and in scenes of emotional intensity. Very distracting.

narrator's screeching characters almost killed it

I think perhaps Rushdie is above my head. I think perhaps this book is worthy of five stars but I simply didn't see it. I think my review is that of one reader who didn't follow his magical tale well enough. But, I am one reader and I can only review a book for what I actually took from the book, and for me this book didn't allow me to connect. I was impressed with the quality of the writing which was absolutely sublime, but I never really cared about the characters. I found myself flipping forward to try to find the next chapter break because I really just wanted it to end. For me it is between 2 and 3 stars with a round up for the attentive writing.

The performance is superb and I give it 5 stars without hesitation.

The performance is enchanting.

I can't begin to review this book. I will neve be able to give credit to the depth, insight, humor and jollity, unparelled writing...and on and on and on.

so i will continue here with the narration by Sunil Malhotra. It is breathtaking in his scope of voices, accents, moods. It is as if he were possessed by the author, stole his voice. Here too I could go on and on.

You really only listen to a sample of one of SR's other books on audio to know what I mean. I just returned one because so awful. But I won't name names.

Superb narration!

My 4th Rushdie. Wasn’t my favorite of them, but in typical Rushdie fashion, a masterpiece nonetheless. Always an absolute joy to read (or listen, in this case). Narrator was good - bit over the top with some characters, but hats off to him.

Not my favorite Rushdie, but still a masterpiece

I actually found the narrator entertaining but the story was far too difficult to follow in audiobook form unfortunately I'm not able to return so there went my one month credit.

I wanted to like this but it was just too difficul
