About this listen

An ordinary outing takes Greta, Alex, and four-year-old Smilla across Sweden's mythical Lake Malice to a tiny, isolated island. While father and daughter tramp into the trees, Greta stays behind in the boat, lulled into a reverie by the misty, moody lake...only later to discover that the two haven't returned. Her frantic search proves futile. They've disappeared without a trace.

Greta struggles to understand their eerie vanishing. She desperately needs to call Alex, to be reassured that Smilla is safe, or contact the police. But now her cell phone is missing too. Back at her cottage, she finds it hidden away under the bedsheets. Had she done that? Or had someone else been in the cottage? But who, and why? As Greta struggles to put the pieces together, she fears that her past has come back to torment her, or she's finally lost her grip on reality...

In this dark psychological thrill ride - with more twists than a labyrinth and more breathless moments than a roller coaster - Greta must confront what she's always kept hidden if she has any hope of untangling the truth.

Okay

It was a little slow and hard to follow what was going on. I almost put it down, but ended up sticking with it. It made sense in the end.

Not what I expected

Nothing about this book leaves you on the edge of your seat, it is not a thriller but more like the ramblings of a crazy person. The entire story is told from one perspective with very brief interjections from other characters. I stopped this halfway through as I could no longer handle the crazy.

Time you'll never get back...

I held out hoping it would get better, less confusing, it didn't. I cannot recommend this book.

All Over The Place

It seemed to me the author started this book with an idea that the first person character would be crazy and maybe a killer. Then about half way through the book she decides to take it in a whole other direction. It was not well organized and too long for what it was. Flashbacks didn't always make sense. Greta Missing time almost like a schizophrenic didn't make sense for her level of trauma. Way too long for no more plot or scene change. Character development wasn't great. I liked the end. About the last 4th of the book was good and well organized. It wasn't worth the reading the first 3/4ths though. It has rookie writer written all over it.

Compelling

I was immediately drawn into this story. I wasn't sure about the ending, but it was satisfying enough...just got a little corny. But overall, I would strongly recommend this in either written or audio form.

you have to finish it for it to make sense!

i think this must be one of the books where you either really love it, or you really hate it. the reviews are pretty polar opposite. i had a hard time following the story when i read it, but i purchased the audible in hopes that listening to it would make the story more clear to follow and interesting. it made all of the difference. i loved it! it really is one of those books in which you have to read the whole book for it to make sense...so all of the readers that DNF missed out on the information that made the initial 3/4 of the book seem nonsensical. the book was absolutely fantastic. the majority of the book is like a fever dream in which you know that you know what is happening...until you specifically think about it...then you realize nothing makes sense. only after the character perspectives change do things click into place.

a note on the narration by Tanya Eby. if listened to at regular speed, i could not handle her voice. i listened to it double speed, and it wasnt so bad then. initially i didnt think i could listen to the whole book because of it.

Started confused, still confused

Struggled to finish. Too many thoughts. Started off. Not sure who. Where is the story taking place? All over the place. Scattered.

That is what the story is like. I'm glad it was fairly short. I don't think I would have finished it if it was any longer.

Once I finally figured out what was happening, I understood why the book is written the way it is. But it made it extremely difficult to continue. At one point I wondered if the character was drunk while telling story.

I read quite a few reviews that had DNF in it and wondered if I'd make it through. But I'm the type of reader that once I start, I finish.

It's not too bad once you get to the last couple chapters and you realize what's happening. But you just have to power through. So if you have extreme patience, go for it.
