About this listen
The wonderful adventure story of two boys, one the son of a mysterious impoverished grandee and the other the handicapped son of a n'eer-do-well drunkard. The boys together travel thru Europe on a Secret Mission and help wrest a fictitious country called "Samavia" from its wicked rulers and place the legendary and rightful heir on the throne denied the dynasty for over 500 years.
“In every nook and cranny, high and low, they sought for him…he had vanished as a star vanishes when it drops from its place in the sky.” From the author of such children’s classics as The Secret Garden and A Little Princess comes this enchanting story of a young boy discovering his true destiny.
Twelve-year-old Marco knows he is being trained for something, but he isn’t sure what. All his life he has traveled with his father in secrecy, learning many languages and the ways of a gentleman, but forbidden to speak about their country of origin, Samavia. Samavia has been fraught with war for the last five hundred years, ever since the prince mysteriously disappeared. But now, there is hope that peace may come at last, as it has been rumored that a descendant of the lost prince may have been found. And Marco is about to take on a secret quest that will change everything for his family and his country.

Story
Slowbridge's customs have been set in stone by Lady Theobald, who has decreed that young ladies should always wear white muslin to social events and that their only decoration should be fresh flowers - which invariably wilt by the end of the evening. Enter Octavia, bedecked in yards of lace and ribbons and with a profusion of diamond jewelry. She is soon informed that only married ladies wear diamonds in England. She makes other mistakes: Young ladies do not ask men to join them on terraces; they do not invite men to play croquet on their lawns.

Story
Immediately following the success of Little Women, Louisa May Alcott sat down to write An-Old Fashioned Girl, expanding on the subject of rich versus poor that she explored in her first novel. It’s a story of a country mouse and a city mouse: 14-year-old Polly Milton travels to Boston for a stay with her friend Fanny Shaw. The wealthy Shaws’ way of life is foreign to Polly who tries to adapt but is quickly labeled “old-fashioned”. Fanny and her friends dress and behave as their elders do, flirting with boys and gossiping.

Story
Ghost stories date back centuries, but those written in the Victorian era have a unique atmosphere and dark beauty. Michael Sims, whose previous Victorian collections Dracula’s Guest (vampires) and The Dead Witness (detectives) have been widely praised, has gathered twelve of the best stories about humanity’s oldest supernatural obsession. The Phantom Coach includes tales by a surprising and often legendary cast, including Charles Dickens, Margaret Oliphant, Henry James, Rudyard Kipling, and Arthur Conan Doyle, as well as lost gems by forgotten masters such as Mary E. Wilkins Freeman and W. F. Harvey. Amelia B. Edwards’s chilling story gives the collection its title, while Ambrose Bierce ("The Moonlit Road"), Elizabeth Gaskell ("The Old Nurse’s Story"), and W. W. Jacobs ("The Monkey’s Paw") will turn you white as a sheet. With a skillful introduction to the genre and notes on each story by Sims, The Phantom Coach is a spectacular collection of ghostly Victorian thrills.

Maurice Hall knows he must choose between living life in the shadows or denying himself a chance at love and fulfilment. Story
A masterful blend of Gothic drama and romance, Wilkie Collins' mystery novel is an exploration of illegitimacy and inheritance. Set in Cornwall, the plot foreshadows The Woman in White with its themes of doubtful identity and deception and involves a broad array of characters. The "secret" of the book's title is the true parentage of the book's heroine, Rosamond Treverton, which has been written down and kept in an unused room at Porthgenna Tower. This is where, 20 years later, much of the novel's action is set.

Story
Edgar Allan Poe, the master of terror, wrote some of literature's most entertaining and influential short stories, works that invented or anticipated modern detective novels, science fiction, and the horror genre. Tales of Terror collects nine of Poe's best-loved stories, all performed in chilling, highly dramatic readings by Jack Foreman. This collection includes such classics as "The Tell-Tale Heart", "The Pit and the Pendulum", "The Fall of the House of Usher", and what many consider his masterpiece, "The Murders in the Rue Morgue."

Hailed as Charlotte Brontë’s “finest novel” by Virginia Woolf, Villette is the timeless semi-autobiographical tale of Lucy Snowe. Left with no family and no money, Lucy goes against her own timid nature and travels to the small city of Villette, France, where she becomes a school teacher in Madame Beck’s school for girls. During her stay, she falls in love—twice—and discovers an independent, inner strength rarely seen in women of her time.

Story
Although it is little known in this country, The Belly of Paris is considered one of Émile Zola’s best novels. Set in the newly built food markets of Paris, it is a story of wealth and poverty set against a sumptuous banquet of food and commerce. Having just escaped from prison after being wrongfully accused, young Florent arrives at Paris’ food market, Les Halles, half starved, surrounded by all he can’t have, and indignant at his world, which he now knows to be unjust. He finds that the city’s working classes have been displaced to make way for bigger streets and bourgeois living quarters, so he settles in with his brother’s family.

Worth re-listening
While you may quickly figure out the conclusion of this book, there is something in the telling of it that is beautiful and hopeful! There are few things which a revisit, and this one has become a go-to!

A little-known gem
Frances Hodgson Burnett is well-known as the author of The Secret Garden. She wrote many other books that are well worth reading or listening to. The List Prince may be her least- known work. Yet it is consistent with her other books. It is a fascinating tale in itself, with deep truths running through it that are larger than any one story. It is also read so skillfully that the narrator’s voice became an organic part of the story itself.

Captivating!
While perhaps slow by some standards, it’s developed in a way that you can’t help but be pulled in. The story is drawn out enough that you really want to see it resolved, but you’re invested more this way, and piece by piece it falls into place. This book lays out the ideas of nobility and virtue like other novels of the topic don’t touch. The weight and importance of a leader’s burden to put others before themselves even with limited resources is a reminder how anyone can do the same. It’s a pleasure to follow this compelling story.

Great start with under-developed ending.
Is there anything you would change about this book?
This book gets you hooked in the first half as you imagine all sorts of delicious directions of possible development. Sadly, the the second half leaves you wishing the first half wasn't so good... so you don't feel like you need to finish it. The ending is so obvious that you really don't need to read it, because your imagination will probably be better anyways. Also, the strong Christian symbolism is muddled by the addition of strong Buddhist mysticism in the second half. It would have been better to stick to one or the other, especially since pure Buddhism is not accurately represented by the theology/mysticism portrayed in this book and trying to couple it with Christianity seems to represent a misunderstanding of the end goal of both religions.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The first half of this book promises an epic adventure with wit and wisdom. Unfortunately you don't realize that you reached the climax until it's over as the ending is something you knew would happen after the first chapter.
What about David Thorn’s performance did you like?
David Thorn's performance is excellent, but not miraculous. Sometimes the voices of the Rat and Marco are easily confused as Marco's whisper sounds just like the Rat's talking (The Rat is a boy, not a furry rodent - no talking animals).
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
I hope this book is never made into a movie because the potential for the over-eager movie industry to make it worse is too great. They would remove the innocence, which is the main redeeming quality, and replace it with bickering and whiny drama. The positive addition of some good action scenes would not be enough to compensate.
Any additional comments?
Don't get this book for your kids as it will only confuse them. I encourage a listen out of curiosity, but anyone who wishes to save a precious credit for something awesome should turn somewhere else. If you like this author, try The Little Princess or The Secret Garden.
