About this listen

With an introduction by Professor Lane on the love of books, this book includes a judicious selection from the writings of Guido Bruno. Here, he describes what bookstores were like during the post-World War I boon in such cities as New York, Chicago, Boston, and elsewhere.

He speaks of a time when very young entrepreneurs saw opening a bookstore as an investment into the future, where the public was eager not only to read the latest novels, but also to enjoy the experience of browsing shelves upon shelves of new literary possibilities.

In this book, we have selected key sections of Bruno’s writings that concentrate on bookstores, what they had to offer, and what kinds of experiences one had during this most interesting time period. Almost all of the bookstores he mentions are long gone. But their memories persist, and one hopes that these “lost bookstores” will not be forgotten forever. Perhaps, even if only in virtual or augmented reality, we can resurrect these wonderful places anew and remember what a beautiful opportunity they presented for us in this strange world we inhabit.
