About this listen

The adventures of Laura Ingalls and her family continue as Pa, Ma, Laura, Mary, Carrie, and little Grace bravely face the hard winter of 1880-81 in their little house in the Dakota Territory. Blizzards cover the little town with snow, cutting off all supplies from the outside. Soon there is almost no food left, so young Almanzo Wilder and a friend make a dangerous trip across the prairie to find some wheat. Finally a joyous Christmas is celebrated in a very unusual way in this most exciting of all the Little House books.

Truly a classic

We all hear about the hardships of life on the frontier, but these books make the experience so relateable.

Drop the violin

I have read the books and love them, could have done without the fiddle playing and awkward singing. Otherwise great.

Exceptional writing, way too loud voice acting!

No one can question the uniqueness and outstanding quality of the LHOTP series, the story and writing are legendary. However, Cherry Jones's voice acting is so terribly loud, even listening at the lowest volume won't protect your ears. Of particular offense are her voicing of the children (Laura, Carrie and Grace) and the singing of songs. Anytime the text indicates someone "calls" or otherwise raises their voice in the slightest for any reason, she shouts directly into your ear with her most annoying voices (Laura's shouting is bad but the way she voices Carrie is the killer). Anytime she can raise her voice for any character, for any reason, she has at it, full steam ahead. She shouts the entire scene of the Wilder brothers trek. She proved to me finally that she is capable of modulating her voice in that scene where they need to be quiet, so I know she's aware of her volume! This is her Achilles heel, because if she just modified her volume, the result would be amazing, because when she isn't shouting into the mic (50% of the book), her reading is great. Oh well! You've been warned, just listen at a low volume and enjoy these amazing works that freeze time and give us the perspective we need to get through this modern dystopia.

Another well read book by Cherry Jones

Cherry Jones is a narrator who is able to do a variety of voices including children and men of all ages!. This would make an excellent gift for any fan of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

The Long Winter

I Love this book it's the best in the Little House Book's. I like when pa goes to the store and gets the wheat at Almanzo and Royal store and how a blizzard kept coming when the train tried to go through. from Francis.

The best in the series!

So interesting to learn about a situation that, if Laura had never decided to be an author, the world would never know about. Excellent descriptions, as always with this series. Highly recommend, reading and listening to them is always a joy and, these being books I read as a kid, nostalgic.
